I just read it - always an entertaining read. Funny yo see a Caterham beat - although the CSR looks practical in comparison to an Atom. Great result for M5 - definitely the swiftest "normal" car.

I drove an Ariel Atom recently - completely bonkers car! Ride like a skateboard, need to wear goggles, air intake just behind your ears - what a noise, what a rush! Also drove the Caterham CSR - civilised by comparison and also insanely fast. My E39 felt like a Buick LeSabre after those two!

M5 aside, I'm really impressed with the Evo 9(326 bhp version). It's final time was marginally quicker than the M3 CSL from last year (4.62,10.82, 15.25).
In comparison, Autocar figured the E39 M5 in '99 in 4.6, 10.6, 15.7.

This is a 0-60 time consistent with no launch control used. LC would knock off several tenths of secs.

4.69 without LC, that's impressive, probably not the best surface for the test, look at Ford GT, I never saw such a slow 0-60 time on that car either. Evo does well (as I would expect), I wonder what the FQ400 version would do.

Of course they would have used launch control, is there some reason I am missing as to why they might not?

It's not as if a magazine like Autocar doesn't know it's there.

I remember when 0-100mph under 10s was for exotic supercars only... ;)

Which ones? I don't think autocar would fake the figures, they are pretty well renowned and respected. I'm sure they are the figures they got on the day. - remember extracting performance figures is not scientific and can depend on many many factors; some people calling themselves experienced/fast drivers could probably only make an E39 M5 do 0-60 in 5.5 s, whereas a BMW test driver driving his own familiar E39 M5 could probably knock a lot off that.

I reckon this test, for the purposes of comparison of each of the cars included in the test in similar conditions, is probably pretty fair and even.

My hope is that the list is a least compiled on the same day.

Several of the times are different than have been obtained by other sources. An example is the 0 to 60 time on the Viper.. one half second slower than other tests I have seen. Even the M5 time.
