Turn off your nav screen and take things back to the old school and bask in the orange glow that is BMW.

that sounds like my e34 M5!

complete darkness, bar those red needles and orange dials!

Unless I need to use the NAV, I always turn off the screen when driving at night. It also help you see better when it's dark outside.
I like how Saab cars have the night panel.

What exactly is "the night panel"
The night panel is a button which switches off all the unecessary lights on the dash leaving only the speedo and tach illuminated. Makes it look like an airplane cockpit. You know Saab makes airplanes as well :)

Oh and the speedo IIRC, will only show 0-140km/h or 84mph

Yeah, I loved the night panel feature on my 9-5 Aero...

Night Panel turns off most of the dash lights, including the upper speed portions of the speedo...I think I have a picture of it somewhere... :confused2

Thats pretty cool.....except for the 84mph limit on the speedo :wroom:
Actually, it works better than you'd think. When you turn on night panel, it looks like this:

Saab Night Panel

But, when you get close to 84mph, the rest of the speedo lights up so you can see how fast you're going :wroom:

The strange thing about night panel is that when you turn it on, all the gauges drop to zero (fuel, tach, etc.)...You really don't notice unless you turn it on in the daytime...

Thanks, Ag...can't wait to go for a drive at night...I haven't done that in a while... :wroom: :flag:

Does the new M5 still have the two orange led's in the headliner?
A bit OT:

Interestingly, in an evasive driving course I was told that you should turn off all interior lights- two reasons: they are distracting and can lower you visual acuity to outside sources, and they can illuminate you and your occupants.

Of course, in that kind of situation you are not concerned with speed or engine rpm....

One other tidbit:

If another car is trying to run you off the road, you must protect the side of the car, from the rear wheel to the rear bumper "as if your life depends on it...because it does". You don't get forced off the road by a car coming next to you- fender to fender....You get spun around by a car pushing the rear end sideways -just tapping you in the rear quarterpanel...

back to night panels.. sorry..

On the new m5 it is white:
What?! I don't think that I like that...
That was one of the things that I loved when we bought our 740iL. We were considering the 740 and the S500 and one of the things that we loved about the 740 is you got in and everything lit up orange. It was like being in a plane cockpit. Why does BMW have to mess with a good thing...
The white rings looks very exclusive and special. Even the +/- on the paddles are white illuminated from inside.
Back when I still had my E39 I used to love to drive out to Half Moon Bay at night when it was storming; good music turned down low, no other cars on the road, seat heaters on, and the warm glow from the classy interior of the E39.
My VW has a cool color combo that isnt intrusive at all (blue and red), but I miss the all orange interior.
I like the Saabs night panel feature. When I fly at night I still usually have all of the panel lights set so I can see everything, but every gauge needs to be lit in an airplane, where as in a car I really dont need to see half the stuff that is illuminated. Gotta love how things that remind us of airplane cockpits arent really how airplane cockpits are set up, but hey, if it looks great and you love it, then run with it.

I know what you mean about the E39 and I think it applies to the E34 too. It was always my dream to own a car that had a dash that looked like an airplane cockpit. One night I was cruising home in my E34 - looked down at my dash and realize - I had it!!
