It's been months since my last video, but the wait is over. After delivering my blown S62 engine to Peter Partee of Partee Racing LLC in an memorable cross country trip in a small RV, I had to do a TON of work to prepare my car for the engine (all that video is yet to come). And I finished just in time.

As someone looking to preserve my M5, what happened to the original motor, why did it blow? How was the new motor built - to OEM spec again?

Our bottom tier rebuild--what we like to call the "slightly better than stock" rebuild--is actually quite a bit better than stock. We bore and hone the cylinders out .008" (BMW second oversize), then etch the cylinder walls to achieve the requisite surface roughness as confirmed by a profilometer. We then install our proprietary pistons manufactured by JE out of 2618 alloy rather than the stock 4032 alloy and use BMW second oversize rings. We reuse the stock rods after confirming that they are concentric, but replace the stock bolts with ARP2000 bolts. We use WPC treatment on genuine BMW bearings. We balance and blueprint everything. The resulting motor is indeed quite a bit better than stock!

What herrubermensch said. He is the engine builder and a fantastic one at that. Can’t recommend him more.

I blew my engine massively overheating it while racing up Central City Hill Climb. I’m not certain of the origin of the overheating, but e39 M5s are know to have overheating issues for a number of reasons, but mainly, poor heat exchange. More details about all of this are in some of my first few videos on my M5 rebuild. Like this one, for example…

Thanks for watching and best of luck on your preservation. I’m doing the same thing so it’s my sincerest desire that my videos can help you and others.
