anyone want to give me a brief overview of how to replace gear shift components? I have a chilton's but i don't understand what parts its referring to.

Most of the parts required are indicated here :

Parts # 7 , 2 and 15 are prone to wear .

Check out UUC's website and look at their SSK installation pages.

The quick fix is usually #2, 7, 13, 16, 17...

The only thing to add is...that clip 3# on the trans is a mofo to get to.

And replace # 4, 15, 19,20, 21 for good luck.
