Powerchip offers a reprogramming of the E39 M5's engine management system that eliminates the top speed limit, raises the rpm limit, and increases horsepower from 394 to 405, and torque from 368 to 379, requiring only that the owner use 93 octane or better gasoline. The greatest torque improvement occurs in the low and mid range, where it would be of greatest benefit for day-to-day driving.

Has anyone used the Powerchip reprogramming, or dyno'ed the car afterward? Is the benefit worth the cost? Any negatives?

Richard,
I have had the PowerChip 93/Gold for over a year now. I did not do a before/after dyno so I don't know what the gains are just for the chip. However there is a good amount of butt-o-meter feel that the car is more responsive, etc.... After I did my mods, I had the car dyno'd and air/fuel ratio measured. It showed some fine tuneing was in order. PowerChip used my dyno graphs and tweaked the software for my chip for no charge. I did have to pay for shipping my DME to/from PC. I think it was worth it. Just a satisfied user.

Good Luck with your M5

Hi Richard

I think if you were to do a search in the forums on "Powerchips” you’ll find that the majority of the member who have software are using Powerchips with great success.

Its one of the best modifications for your beast.

It is the ECU upgrade of choice in this board. Not the only choice available, but highly regarded and a board sponsor. I noticed a big difference over the Dinan software in my car and I like Dinan and have some of their other products. No affiliation, just a very satisfied customer.

Thank you and my apologies. I had searched on "Powerchip" before initiating the post, and had received no results. Perhaps this was due to a temporary server problem (or my impatience), as a search is now successful. I think it's always appropriate to search past threads first.

Sounds like I should try the Powerchip.

If I install a power hip with aK&n filter & SSexaust and X pipe how much hp will I get. I have a stock 01 Lemans Blue M5
The "Lemans Blue" part of your post will net you almost as much horsepower as the other mods :D ;)

Just a conditioned guess based upon monitoring this board for a couple years:

Powerchip: 10HP
K&N: 0 HP, perhaps even a net loss over a clean, stock filter, and they could ruin your expensive MAFS.
SS exhaust and x pipe (Assuming no headers): 5-10 HP

Perhaps of more value is the improved cold-engine drivability with the powerchip, and the sound of the exhaust. The only reason to use K&N filters on the beast is the fact that they're washable. JMO!!!!!

K & N Zero HP.

SS Exhaust -1 to +2 HP

X-Pipe -1 to +1 HP

Powerchip 10 HP

Tubi is about the only exhaust with decent gain 6 HP. Most of the others ranged from -2 to +2 HP

The X-Pipe adds a lot of sound, but when dynoed, a few lost Power.

Powerchip does a whole lot of cool things beyond the Power increase. You can raise the rev limiter. Eliminate the speed limiter. Raise your idle (Great for an Uber clutch) and it gives smooth strong throttle response.

Taking your exhaust system off, and having no filter at all will not yeild 30 HP. Therefore no matter what you put there for protection and filtration, it will be less power than
having nothing at all.

But exhausts are a great Mod for Looks and Sound pleasure. They are also a cool weight saving. Unless you are doing Headers, there really isn't much power on the table.
