I was reading this blog (E39 M5 Issues - chrisparente.com) when I saw a cool looking ABS heat shield which is apparently made and sold by a guy named Kevin Anderson. I couldn't find the specific person on Facebook and the name is very common, so I thought that perhaps someone here has contact info for him. I want to know if he still makes this heat shield and how much he wants for it. I can always make my own, but it won't look as good as his that is for sure.

mmzcee, thanks, that is very helpful. There are many module rebuilders out there for these Bosch 5.7 ABS modules. Do you by any chance know who may be adding extra shielding to prevent future failures? I think some rebuildders offer lifetime warranty on their modules, but I didn't know that they added additional heat shielding.

I found him through my wife's Facebook account. I believe this link should work.

I originally found him doing a search for "E39 M5 ABS module heat shield" (or something to that effect) and some images popped up showing the heat shields and from there find his account. I messaged him and ordered the heatshields. He has one for the ABS module and a second for the firewall. I got them both and am very happy with them.

I hope this helps

Interesting thread and idea, price was a bit too steep for me for just some bent heat shield, so I took the liberty of finding some other decent material, have purchased a few squares and will try to make this myself. If I am successful, it is a big savings over the $165 this ebay shield costs. I will share details with the board if and when I am successful.

When you say "just" some bent heat shields...........

Each of my patterns is bespoke, and took several versions of pattern, and at least 12 hours in total just to come up with a clean design and shape.
Each shield is hand made and assembled, with attention to fit and finish to make it appear as an OEM piece would. These are not someone's garage arts & crafts project, but a professional quality product. Making them also takes a toll on the body, from dealing with fiberglass dust, to having skin splits all over my hands and knuckles. My silver heat shields are a more affordable option to the black, and less expensive than the Ebay option (which was what made me start making these- it looked so bad, especially for the price, I knew I could do better).

I would say these are a far cry from "just some bent heatshield material", but to each their own

$20 for a 12” square from Summit racing, nice thickness, holds shape well, cuts easy, and insulates against heat up to like 1400 degrees! Bonus is that it also covers the shorty brake lines that are also right there…

I bought two pieces so I can add some more if necessary in riveted together noticed the riverside put on the existing heat shield to hold it together in its form. There was a threaded hole in the side of the ABS unit which I used and found a good screw that matched the threads and then used the ABS mounting bolt for the other point…

Here's exactly what I bought, and I got this here due to the 1000's of "heat sheild" sketchy items directly from China that were of a questionable thickness.

Basically I put the large square on the outside of the ABS unit, did the rear bend to go around the brake lines first, then piece by piece, marked the shield with needle nose pliers where I wanted to bend it, used my counter top and a level to crease/bend it and then scissors and tin snips to make any cuts. Mark drill holes with a sharpie and use the appropriate drill bit size for whatever hole you need to make. I made some smaller ones for the rivets and slightly larger ones for the bolts.

12 x 24 would definitely be optimal, so get that one instead! I bought 2 sheets for a total of around like $52 shipped I think with tax + shipping... if I knew there was a 12 x 24 piece I would have bought that instead... The 12x12 did not reach to the primary bolt that holds the ABS unit, so if you notice, I had to rivet a small piece to reach that location. You won't have this problem with the 12 x 24 piece.

Hey @boris1 - thanks for reading Work, Wine and Wheels! Yeah I like the shield Kevin made. I just let him know about this thread in case he wants to drop his contact info.

^^ what's your price on your products? care to post them here?

Yes, my first attempt was a blind look and all in. Consider that round 1. Is the metal portion of your heat shield extremely rigid, so much so that it can cut fingers if the edge is sharp? not sure what I am using has that amount of rigidity, but it's good to 1400 degrees.

Please explain how your version is also "completely sealed to the inner fender" as it appears to just slide down in there for a snug fit, but is simply resting on the inner fender.

Not saying I can make a better one, or one as good, but for $40 and some testing, I will make one acceptable for my engine bay and that looks better than my first attempt. I am going to open up the top on version 2 as well, so there's zero heat being trapped.

Speaking of heat being trapped, your version completely covers the electronics box, with no venting other than back towards the brake lines in the ABS unit. Wouldn't heat be equally trapped in there also?

Just talking out loud here, you make a nice product, and hope you sell them all, and you've obviously put in the time and effort to refine your design over time and trial.

It's like Origami, you just have to know where to make the proper bends and repeat.
