Well I don't NEED one - but with a nice piece of glass over it it would make a helluva nice coffee table...
Now Greg what would the maintenance requirements look like on a glass covered M5 engine?! I can see it now, BMW recommends that after 1600 beer can placements you will need to change the head gaskets.greg said:Well I don't NEED one - but with a nice piece of glass over it it would make a helluva nice coffee table...
If you want to come by the Fall-Line Motorsports shop in Northbrook, we are putting an S62 engine in an E46 M3 right now. You could have this done too.Anita said:And I'd like to stuff it into my M Coupe so I could spank on a few more Z06's at the track

I would like to see the results! Will it be ready/or out on one of the tracks soon? Maybe I'll have to sneak down to take a look. Speaking of tracks, were you with the Fall-Line Crew at Autobahn last weekend--heard the track was a bit crowded(?) Which loop, or both were you, or they on?
Hope you can make it to the Chicago get together May 21st!!! Still in the planning phase--looks like it may be a DIY tech session at Patrick in the am. Maybe this is a nutty idea but do you think Fall Line would be interested in folks coming around? How close are they to Patrick BMW?
Thanks!
Anita

This car is being built from a "body in white (gray, actually)" purchased from BMW. This is a stock tub and main body panels pulled from the production line before any undercoating, sound deadener, etc., has been applied. Every part on this car is brand new. There are many similarities to the recent E46 M3 Grand Am Cup cars that Fall-Line has built. Advantages of the S62 engine are 500 reliable and even-tempered HP, plus this engine is lighter than the S54 six. Motec engine controls will be used. The E46 chassis is of course smaller and a good deal lighter than the E39, while having wheel well room for the same 275 section width tires. This car is aimed at open track use and eventually BMWCCA club racing, not the street.davem3smg said:Hi Dick,
Just curious: Why are you putting the S62 engine in the M3. Did his engine blow or was he just not satisfied with a 6 cylinder??

I was not at Autobahn as I was running in a BMWCCA club race at VIR that weekend. I hope to get some track time at Autobahn in the near future, but I am not a member and as the facility just opened, the members are exercising their pent-up demand.
The M5-powered E46 under construction at Fall-Line is being built as a track car for a customer legal in A Mod for club racing, so it will likely appear at the usual outings once finished. Completion is still 6 or so weeks away.
With respect to the Chicago-area outing being planned and Fall-Line Motorsports, you can give Mark Boden a call at (847) 480-9804 and see what he says.

Thanks Dick. That's really cool. I've never heard of BMW having something like this before. How much does something like this cost for the chasis, engine, and install? Even though the car is not headed for the street, is it street legal? What kinda of trans is it going to have?RRoberts said:This car is being built from a "body in white (gray, actually)" purchased from BMW.
