Hello All,

Been perusing this board for some time before I pulled the trigger. Many thanks to all for your infinite wisdom. I really felt prepared once I found the right car and began negotiations...

Anyway, I took delivery about 2 weeks ago. She is a 2001 Titanium silver, all black (lux) interior, has Dinan Stage 2 suspension and a "Billy Boat" tri- flow exhaust. Anyone ever heard of "Billy Boat" exhausts for BMW's? Apparently he started out as a 911 tuner and has broadened his scope of applications. She's got 24,800 on the clock and a new set of Goodyear F1's.

The day after I took delivery the dreaded SES light came on and has not gone off. Unfortunately, I took delivery about 2 weeks after the factory warranty expired. This is not a CPO car but seems like it was well cared for (I found the previous owner and called him - no major problems, or SES lights, that he could remember. He also owns an M coupe for what it's worth. Had to trade the M5 for an Infiniti SUV for his wife.) I'm going to take it to my local specialist and have them read the codes. I have a feeling that it's a CPS since she runs a little rough when I first turn her over. Rough meaning the engine drones high, then low, then high, then low, etc. for about 30 secs. after I turn the key. Not diesel-like at all.

Any help guessing what the problem may be will be appreciated. Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge.

Welcome, you new Beast sounds nice, very cool colour combo, post some pics. And a Dinan susp?? Sweet!

As for the SES, I think your best bet is to get the fault codes and post them here, will help, and I am sure there is someone out there who had the same, and they'll be more then happy to help, as you know it's an awesome board!
Cheers!

Jon, welcome...sorry to hear about your ses light coming on, however, I believe your description of the way your car idles during the first 30 seconds after a cold start sounds normal to me.

I test drove an E46 M3 and was very surprised how rough the idle was when the car was cold. The rpm's were jumping up and down until warm. I thought it was quite an unrefined experience but on the other hand there isn't anything unrefined about generating 333hp out of a 3.2l I6!

Welcome aboard Jon

The SES problem is a common one for those of us who have fitted aftermarket exhausts. The usual solution (works 90% of the time) is to replace the Lambda Sensors. This is a easy & quick job for your dealer to do and will probably cure your problem.

Thanks for the input so far, guys. I'll keep everyone posted once I get her back from the shop. Got a trip to Vegas this weekend so I won't know the fault codes until next week.

Regarding your B&B exhaust... Billy Boat is a race driver and has been manufacturing exhaust systems for some time now. I had a system on my e28 M5 and loved it because of its aggressive sound. B&B are one of the loudest exhausts available so if you're thinking it's too loud there are quieter alternatives.

Hope you enjoy the car!

Welcome JonW, just joined into the "asylum" as it was aptly put to me as I'm sure it's an accurate statement! cherrsagai

I see you're in VA and I believe there are several mid-atlantic beast owners that gather when the weather permits so I'm looking forward to possibly seeing yours and everyone elses. Great choice and welcome with us!

I've seen a few around lately as well, two in my neighborhood alone! I didn't get a chance to stop and chat with the other driver's as I was driving my 'hoe at the time. Can't wait for a local event so we can all swap stories and tips. I'm pretty sure "nolift911" lives in my neighborhood per his M5board signature. If you're out there nolift911, send me a a PM
