Hi,

So my first post on a m5 owners board!

I have a 02 plate e39 m5 and I have been searching high and low for the best alloy wheel 'refurb' experts for the 18" satin-chromed finish that is standard on these wheels. However its really hard to tell who is any good and I have heard many stories about refurb 'experts' who don't provide long-term finishes. I am based in Kent, England so any advice would be appreciated on the best places to get them restored to 'new'.

Thanks.

I have read some good reviews of Diamond Styling, Sevenoaks, Kent. If you do some searches on here you will find this is a sort of 'Holy Grail'. It's an elusive thing to achieve. I will be needing to get 4 x rears re-furbished soon and I've read everything there is on here and elsewhere regarding shadow chrome and quality of finish and I'm still uncertain who to trust my wheels to. Good luck!

Search for member Tiauguinho and see who he dealt with in the UK. The end result was as close to Shadow Chrome as you can get.

Details in this thread: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3...chrome-wheels-quest-refurbish-perfection.html
IIRC, somewhere in that thread there were some subsequent bad experiences with whoever it was that Tiauguinho finally used (the company rather than the individual) and he was disappointed with them. It's a very long thread, but worth reading through.
Lepsons also get panned as well as praised in various threads, so it seems to be a difficult decision.
I'll be interested to see what other board members come up with.

Hi all,

Thanks very much for the words of wisdom. Appreciate your time :)

The general consensus seems to be that there are good and bad out there in equal measure! I have had a local quote ('spit & polish') for £414 for 'refurb' back to the original finish (or as close as I guess). My local BMW specialist (Munich legends) however have used them and not been impressed. The garage do some pretty major 'back to factory' rebuilds.

It all seems a bit of a minefield! If it was not for the fact I have to save up for the work I could afford to be a little more 'gungho'!

I've had excellent experience of Spit n Polish. They did a great job on some CSL alloys I had in shadow chrome. Proper acid bath and powdercoat process, I paid about £400 for 4x 19" wheels.

I've also seen loads of people recommend Lepsons, they have a great reputation.

You must be close to me if that's local, I'm in Tunbridge Wells... :byee55amg

Hi Raify,

Yes I am close... I also live in T=wells! Is your M5 a light blue with an aftermarket exhaust that makes it pretty loud? One drove past me a few weeks back...

Ha! Small world. Mine is Avus blue, not that light. Plus it's massively dirty at the moment. Exhaust is stock, so unless I was driving around like a tool I don't think that could have been me.

I'll dig out the pics I took of the CSL wheels if you like, after Spit n Polish finished with them...

HI, Yes it is!

The M5 I saw was very very loud! Some pictures would be good actually. Do they really go to town on the alloys. Someone else in this thread has recommended a company in Basingstoke who really strip them down including chemical dipping shot blasting, baking in an oven quite a few times during the process?

Hi Raify,

I would be really interested to see the results....

It definitely was not your car as it was so loud! I wonder how many e39 M5 owners are in Tunbridge Wells?

Hi Ash

I also had my wheels done by Rimstock who did the work on Tiago's, I was one of I think 3 lucky guys who got great service, finish and price from them. After one guy left it went to sh!t.

I know Simon (Slippery on here) and have seen his wheels in person, they are a teeeeny bit more silver than mine in the light, but pretty much perfect, he got them done at Diamond Styling in Sevenoaks. I'll await with interest to see who you go with and your experience with them, as I have another set I wish to get done...

Here are my wheels...

Is there anybody in the uk who can touch up slight kerb rash? My alloys are in good condition but 2 have a little bit of kerbing to them. I know and have seen on here that in the states they have some mobile outfits who can match the colour for slight rash

Not sure how helpful these pics will be. All 4 wheels were very badly kerbed all the way round before the refurb. I thought the finish was great.

I was one of the original 3 who, along with Tiago was extremely happy with the service from Rimfurbish. However, the long term wasn't good, and the finish chipped off far more easily than I would expect, and all stories since Matt Ball left have been very poor.

I want to get mine done again, but am now very concerned. Phil (at CPC) always uses Lepsons, and hasn't had a bad experience yet, but I'm not convinced after the stories on here.

So, any other suggestions, or do I need to head to Sevenoaks...? :)

so I spoke to Diamond Styling, and they don't want to do our wheels any more, as they are too hard apparently!

I decided to take a punt and I contacted Rimfurbish again (0121 5243028). They have a new manager now, called Debbie Cox. She is being incredibly helpful, and is turning the job round very quickly for me and is keen to show what a great service they provide. I said i would post the results on here, so keep your eyes peeled for their return... :) Fingers crossed their problems are behind them!

The cost is £82.68 per wheel, carriage £70.00 for 2 sets in separate locations, all plus vat.

Hi all,

Thanks again for the advice. It looks like a three way contest for me between in 'Diamond styling'a local specialist ('Spit & Polish') and a Basingstoke firm. I am impressed with raify's wheels.perhaps if local I can see them at some point? Unfortunately since I have started this thread my car has got a serious water leakage problem through the rear passenger door-membrane so this is going to cost me in the region of£800 to fix so the alloys will have to wait for now.

I really appreciate the help and suggestions though. I have been overwhelmed by the response so thanks!

Incidentally, does anyone know if there is a Kent or South East UK e39 M5 owners club? I can't seem to find one via a Google search...
