hey guys, i've posted here before and i've always gotten great responces from everyone. i've decided to consult with the m5board before doing anything drastic.

a question, i just recently viewed a 2001 M5 last week, the guy is asking 45,000 for it. it has 55,000 miles on it.

here are the specs:

"completely loaded with all the extra options":

black/black
premium sound (m-audio w/ sub woofer)
all leather
racing/bucket front seats
universal garage opener
cassette
wood trim
lighted gear knob
6 disc cd player
cold weather package
parking sensors
navigation system
electric rear shade
angel eyes
and new wheels with about 50% tread left on them

the car has about another one and a half year left of warranty CPO and full maintenance, both from BMW.

my question is...is it a good deal you think? the car looks and drives great. it's been maintained by BMW 100% of it's life. the paint is great and so is the interior. the paint has a a few little knicks that are to be expected from driving on the highways and what not.

thanks in advance,

rudy

When buying a car, always trust your instincts. When your instincts say "this car is perfect" then start going through everything on the car as carefully as possible.

Have you driven other M5s? If not, try to arrange that because unless you are familiar with these cars, any M5 will feel like it is in perfect shape even if it is a not-so-good one.

Have a look at for a list of things to check:

Is the car built before mid-September 2001? Look at the Vanos info:

Best of luck on your car purchase!

Rudy,

I purchased a 2001 Titanium silver with black interior with the wood trim. 45,000 miles. I believe that is the luxury interior vs. the sport. I don't have the rear shade but have everything else. I paid $42,000, but no extended warranty. I purchased an extended warranty fo $1900. That covers me for 36 months and til 75,000 miles.

Hope that gives you some comparison.

By the way, I sold a 95 540i 6sp and have no regrets! :wroom:

Rudy, IMO it's a little too steep try to negotiate him down to about $40K. I just bought 01' Black/Carmel same options except w/o M-audio last month. 20K less miles, and little less $$ and CPO'd till 1/07. Got to replace front tires in ~3Kmiles from now. Other than that the car's in excellent cond. Just a data point for you. You'll pay a little more for an 02' but IMO if I could of found an 02 that would be able to be CPO'd till 08', I would have gone for that. My priority list was, clean and well maintained car with clean service history, warranty for 1+ yrs remaining and then price. Good luck hunting and always test drive it thoroughly.

Rudy,

I think the price might be a bit steep, BUT...

If it is THE car for you - the right color, the right options, pristine condition, the right warranty, etc. - then it may be worth it.

Good luck!

Is the car local? Maybe have a board member do a driveby for you....

Did he change the front seats? There is only one seat from the factory. Sounds like the three factory options are M audio, PDC and SunShades

AT first until you said CPO I would have said it was steep. But actually I almost bought a CPO 01 with 45K miles for like $48K. So actually I guess it is steep. Either get it down to like $42 - $43K or shop around some more. CPO's are a little hard to come by so if you are itching to get it like everyone was just do it. You will for get about the few extra bucks after the first week of driving (at least I sure did). But if you have the extra cash you can just get a more recent model like a 02 for like $43K+ with less mileage and buy out of your own pocket an extended warranty. Also remember that if you go this route you are getting a slightly longer factory warranty and maintenance warranty.

For Reference Here are a few that you might or might not have seen already:

I think $45k is fair - it's not a great price but with the CPO and the extended maintenance it's not a bad price either. The extended maintenance alone will probably save you at least $500 - $1000 or more if the car hasn't undergone Inspection II yet.

Its a lil steep, I just bought a 02 in CA with lower miles a couple thousand more than your seller asking, this is with a original warranty for another year.

The fair market price for your situation is in low 40's. hope this help and hope you are not emotional attached to the beast yet =) g luck
