Am I missing something, or is the title of this thread misleading - is there really some adjustment that affects the best viewing angle, or does this just sharpen and brighten the display, regardless of what your angle is?

There is adjustments you can make which will actually make the screen more visibly clear and brighter based on viewing angle. Since the 16:9 screen is used in both the X5 and M5 and needs certain backlighting settings for the different viewing angles (X5 screen sits taller, M5 screen sits lower)....you can actually take a screen that was originally for an X5 and adjust it to look better in the M5.

This thread was mainly for those who upgraded from the 4:3 screen to a 16:9 screen and purchased theirs used.

OK, thanks, that's a relief. Glad to know that before I started surgery in the garage.

I'm still surprised that you can electrically adjust these for viewing angle. At first, from reading the thread without looking at the pictures it sounded like the screws physically altered the screen angle.

You can also do this if you have issues with the screen brightness during the day or have polarized sunglasses that block out the screen when you are wearing your sunglasses. It's really individual preference. Much like adjusting the screen brightness, contrast and sharpness on your TV, you can do the same thing following this procedures that Fritz wrote about.

woohoo!

awesome. just did the navi upgrade, enabled the perspective mode & its got me smiling! :D the perspective mode is so much more cool.

thanks guys!

anyone know how to change the startup screen as well. the write-up in the link doesnt provide. tia.

Thanks for the instruction. Can I pop off the front radio buttons without having to take apart the display unit? They appear to be locked in place from the inside and don't pop off like the climate control buttons. I spilled soda and the buttons are sticky. I need to wash them.

Frits I got a quick question for you what year of the nav disc do you have because mine looks old and it's air view on the view that you have any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can remove the buttons w/out removing the display. You have to pull them out w/a degree of force; no tools necessary or turning of the knob--just pull it out.

not so wide screen help

help please members, i have just fitted a x5 wide screen in my e39 m5 and done the adjustment thanks to frits post :), here is my question, on opening door splash screen is full width but with key on it reverts to my problem,i have a 20mm band on both sides of screen on all menus and have the setting to adjust between split and full but this makes no difference installed a mk3 cd drive first and lastly the screen my version is 3/1/63 any ideas lads n lasses

Just wanted to thank Frits for this post, I purchased an E53 screen off eBay recently and this helped me to get my new screen working great. FWIW I found that the third button up on the bank of 4 made the biggest difference from a contrast/brightness perspective:
