A year after the Geneva Auto Salon 2004 and the launch of the "Concept M5" we are weeks near of delivering the BMW M5 E60 to customers in Europe. After the left-hand drive European cars development work will begin on right-hand drive European cars. After this the development work will begin on the USA-specification M5 E60.

In addition to this it was the world-premiere of the BMW M6, the 6-series with the same transmission, engine and electronics as the BMW M5. Also there was interesting news from BMW Alpina with the launch of the 500 HP Alpina B5, with a supercharged V8. Also Sweden's supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg CC-R broke the high-speed test at Nardo with a top speed of 388 km/h. More on this later.

The BMW M5 and M6

The BMW stand consisted of two levels and on the first level the new facelifted 7-series as well as the new 3-series. Also one the unique in it's class 130i which will have a debut in September. On the second floor there was the VIP-section as well as cars from Individual (330i, 760Li, Z4 and X5 4,8iS).

The BMW M cars of the stand consisted of one BMW M6 in Indianapolis Red as well as an Silverstone II M5 in full leather Merino in colour Silverstone II. In addition it was a race version of the 3,0 CSL. The BMW M6 carbon fibre enforced plastic roof as on the M3 CSL was a beautiful sight under the showroom lights. Also there was a M3 E46 with the optional Competition Package that consists of M3 CSL wheels, alcantara steering wheel and brakes.

The M6 had full black Merino leather interiour with leather in the middle console as well as on the dash in black Merino leather. The M6 was equipped with the optional full-leather interiour and thus had leather on the dash.

The interiour was familiar from partly the 645Ci and the M5, since the M6 can be seen as a combination of these. The speedometer, rev-counter, HUD-display, M Sport-button , SMGIII console, pads and shifter are all identical to the M5.

The exterior had identical "M aerodynamically optimized exterior mirrors" as the M5. Comapred to the M5 the M6 wheelbase is shorter and the center of gravity is lower, partly thanks to the carbon roof. The M6 is therefore a unique car in every respect in terms of dynamics.

On the BMW M6 press pictures the interiour panels where Madeira wood (a darker shade of wood) and optionally you could choose Carrera wood (light wood trim) or Piano Black finish (black painted panels). However fro the M6 in Geneva BMW M displayed a carbon fibre interiour which for now only is a prototype status. I think it looked good and went well with the carbon roof and the M6 even sportier character.

The USA launch date for the BMW M6 is not decided as of now but most probably be happening late this year. The M6 price comapred to the M5 cannot be converted over different markets since different service and equipment arestandard on both of these cars on different markets. In Europe on the German market there is a price difference of around €20 000. The M6 will most probably also me offered on the North American market with a manual gearbox since that is decided for to come for the BMW M5. As stated previously the side gills on the M5 and M6 are for design purposes. There is no plan to decide on a higher top-speed limiter than the current 250 km/h (156 mph) limiter.

The active seats (4MA) that are available on the M5 will nto be available on the M6 since the M6 seats as wel las the car is already more sportier. A M6 Convertible and a M6 CSL is something that has to be decided of by the board of BMW and not BMW M. Judging from the BMW M Manager Bruhnkes previous work-experience at Mercedes AMG he is iused to a larger product portfolio and there would be no surprise if BMW M would go a similar way.

M Light alloy wheels in double spoke styling 167 M in 19'. These wheels are optional on the M5, however the M6 cannot be ordered with the M5 wheels, the radial spoke styling 166 M 19'.

The exterior mirrors are identical with built in illuminating lights for enterign the car in the dark and illuminating the area next to the door. Black inserts are also on the mirrors on the M6, which was inspired form racing hne the race-cars have different coloured mirrors to make them easily recognizable.

The rear-spoiler of the M6 is built in on the trunk, but is the same shape as other 6-series.

Design elements. On the M5 there is openings into the engine, but the purpose is the same: design.

4,5 kilograms are saved from the roof by using carbon fibre. Therefore the M6 cannot be ordered with a sunroof. Carbon-fiber reinforced plastics has a density of 1,5 kg / dm^3 as opposed to 2,7 kg / dm^3 for aluminum. Acheveing these weight savings results in faster speeds in bends and further reduction of body dive and roll since the center of gravity is lowered significantly.

Sparsely used sound insulation material is promising for an aural experience together with the exhuast which is already a bit louder than the M5 exhaust, which is according to BMW M plans of the car.

M6 door sills are illuminated, which is not the case on the M5.

Norice the attention to detail when it comes to the stitiching. Individual could surely exchange the colour of the thread from black to M colours for a more enhanced look of the leather surfaces.

Familiar instrument cluster from the BMW M5. Red needles in the dials, a classic M theme on BMW M cars. Rumours say it is possible to use the 330 km/h scale all out on for example the Nardo high-speed oval.

The M Multifunction seats with active seatbacks are not available for the M6. This is because the seats for the M6 have so much lateral support in standard form so active ones are not needed.

Classic coupe rear seats with classic M635CSi form the 1980's. The M635CSi was the last BMW which was produced without a top.speed limiter and thus made a top speed of 255 km/h. In USA it was branded as a M6.

Rear differential is also similar to the BMW M5.

I prefeer the styling of the M5. A nice que of three cars...

The M5 E60 required the double amount of air compared to the M5 E39. That is why the deletion of foglights on the M5 is needed.

Rotated rev-counter for optimum vision at higher revs, just as what is common on classic race Porsches.

BMW Individual

BMWIndividual should also be available for North American customers, and the only problem is that some of the US-ordering process is not made for BMW Individual, but a manual order through a level higher than hte dealer would make it possible to get individual products in the USA. It seems that BMW M / BMW Individual is in talks with BMW North America to streamlime the ordering process as well as inform the consumers more about individual in the USA.

The Individual BMW 330i

On the second floor of the stand there was a E90 330i Individual. The 3-series is available with six Individual leather colours and six Individual colour combinations as well as four Individual trim options.

The BMW 130i

The 130i must be the city center car. With 258 HP it catapults the 1-series to 100 km/h in 6,2 s. It has a limited top speed of 250 km/h and it would be interesting to see what a unrestricted 130i would have for top speed with it's six-gear gearbox. The 130i comes with specially designed 17-inch V-spoke alloys.

Special light alloys, chromed radiator grilel and twin chromes tail-pipes makes is unique for the 130. In the interiour leather steeringwheel and shifter makes the package complete.

Thanks to new weight-saving technologies in the engine the weight-distribution is 50/50. Tail-pipes unique for the 130i.

The 3-liter engine is the lightest in is class thanks to for example electronically driven water-pump and a magnesium engine cover. The BMW DNA is pure in the 130i with a straigh six that revs to 7000 rpm.

After BMW M and Alpina I felt it was time to go and visit my fellow countrymen. And that is not Saab or Volvo (Which are not Swedish but American by now). It was the supersportscar producer Koenigsegg Automotive of Ängelholm, Sweden.

At the last Geneva Salon of 2004 the Koenigsegg CC-R was introduced. The R-version of the first Koenigsegg, the CC8S which had all the features of the CC8S but a refined design of the side air-intakes, different headlight arrangement, a revised rear-design, larger brakes as well as new front splitters. Most importantly it have a much more powerful engine that produces 806 HP compared with the 655 HP of the standard model. Torque is up from 750 Nm to 920 Nm and it has a dry weight of 1180 kg. Christian von Koengisegg himselfs liken the comparison between the CC8S and the CC-R with the BMW 330i (E46) and the M3: "Compared to the CC8, the CCR chassis is slightly reinforced , through extra brcing and a different lay-up of the tub. It also have different brakes, tyres, wheels, shock absorbers, anti-roll bars, engine internals, supercharging system, body changes, interiour changes."

A year after it's introduction almost all orders for Koenigsegg are for the CC-R version, since it is marginally more expensive (around €40 000 more) for much more power and an overall more competent supercar. Over 20 examples have been delivered as of autumn 2004 the order list is growing with almost exclusively CC-R orders. Koenigsegg is working to expand their facilities so they can meet demand for 2005. Homologation for the USA market is underway and final certifications are scheduled to be finished so the car can be launched in late 2005 for USA. Two CC-R have been sold in Australia where the CC-R is the only street legal supersportscar on the market today. There is no problem in delivering a right-hand drive Koengisegg.

The goal is for Koenigsegg to sell at 150 examples of this car which they hope can be reached within 3-4 years from now.

The outlet on the rear "engine hood" with the Ghost emblem. Beneath the engine air outlet there is a large curved outlet that works together wit ha ducktail to form an integrated wing which creates enough downforce to replace a rear wing thus enabling a higher top speed.

The V8 engine wieghts just under 200 kg which is difficult to manage with a V-12. Some people that critisize the Koenigsegg engine to be a developed Ford engine. According to Koengisegg the engine is 80% engineeered in-house by Koenigsegg. The block is from Ford Racing, but just about everything else is Koenigsegg developed: oil-spray lubricaton of the pistons, engineering the engine as a stressed member of the chassis, the exhaust, the flywheel, clutch, superchargers, pistons, fuel-system, conrods, crankshafts etc.

The silver ghost is to honour the Swedish Fighter Jet Squadron No.1 which used the premises where Koenigsegg produces their cars. The ghost was the squadrons symbol. Today some of the mechanics of the Swedish JAS Gripen 39 fighter jet does build the Koenigsegg today.

The McLaren F1 managed a very high top speed -close to 400 km/h- with "only" 627 HP and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 struggles to reach 400 km/h with 1000 HP. The problem is that Bugatti engineers have to work with a body that is a finished design while Koenigsegg engineered their design from the engineers wishes.

The Koenigsegg CC-R have a drag coefficient of 0,297 which have been measured at Michelin wind tunnels. This is lower than the McLaren F1.

Other side air-intakes than the CC8S.

The three circular rings on the rearlights are a design feature that reappears on the rear lights as well as in the interiour.

Carbon is everywhere. Soft Tempur materials are the seating surfaces made of and the seat shells are made out of carbon.

The shifter is placed as close to the steering wheel as possible to minimize the distance and time of travel for the right hand between changing gears and holding the steering wheel.

Remember not to open the door and the bonnet on the same time on your Koenigsegg when the battery is out since you could scratch the hood. This is becuase the window goes down a bit when opening the door to avoid a "collision" with the hood. But if the battery is "dead" the window cant go down and will thus cause scratches. Also, look out for high sidewalks when parking the car... Park Distance Controls is optional.

An interiour straight to the point. Positioned on the steering column there is the tachometer and LCD-displays. The most frequently used controls such as the safety button, starter button, light switches, window regulators, wing mirror adjustments are positioned there. Controls for the climate control, traction, hazard and ride height are positioned above and below the center control.

The 18 inch magnesium wheels are standard on the CC-R. The five-spoke wave shaped spokes and large open areas that helps the evacuation of hot air from the brakes. The front brakes are 362 mm in diameter and are six piston in front and four piston in rear.

The Jas 39 Gripen. The Jas 39 Gripen fighter recently won against seasoned and battle-proven US fighter jet Lockheed Martin F16 Falcon in a competiton for the new generation of fighter jets for NATO-country Hungary. Do I spot a Koenigsegg on the courtyard? The picture is taken above Läckö Slott near Lidköping, Sweden.

This is the actual CC-R Koenigsegg that did the top-speed test on the Prototipo circular proving ground in Nardo, complete with some dirt on it and everything. Bugs on the windscreen was however removed! The speed-circle (that is not oval...) performs high-speeds testings 363 days a year 24 h a day. For the Geneva Salon in 2005 they presented their result: 388 km/h at 6790 rpm. Rev limiter is 7600 rpm. This was the average speed over a distance of 1 km. This is faster than the McLaren F1 acheived on the high-speed oval. Ambient temperature was 8 degrees celsius.

Carbon lip that separates the air and which determines which air that should pass above or under the car. The front splitter on this CC-R is painted in silver. It is made of carbon and was unpainted on the red record-breaking car.

The Koenigsegg CC8S during testing on the Prototipo high-speed oval. Since the circle is banked the true top-speed is somewhat higher. The Prototipo circular track has a circumference of 12,5 km. The steering wheel has to be constantly at a 30 degree angle. The circle is made of concrete and is rather bumpy at high speeds.

Temperature in Celsius for the car during the top speed test:

  • Tires: 64 degrees
  • Engine coolant: 91 degrees
  • Intake air intercooler: 64 degrees
  • Gearbox oil: 94 degrees
  • Engine oil: 112 degrees

Carbon used throughout the car.

The car had standard Michelin wheels at the test, standard ride height of the car, standard engine configuration, standard wheel geometries, standard gearbox, standard clutch, standard brakes and standard overboos pressure from the superchargers.

The McLaren F1 managed 386,7 km/h in top speed on a straight road, at the 9 km long Ehra Leissen test-track at the Volkswagen facilites. On the picture above with the 386,7 km/h top speed it is evident that McLaren have taped over the indicators, the area between the hood and the body as well as removed the wiper. Thus modificated the car at the time of testing at the Ehra-Leissen track test.

At Prototipo in Nardo the McLaren F1 reached a top speed of 372 km/h (compared to the CC-R 388 km/h) which is a 3,95% slower speed than it acheived on Ehra Leissen because of the banked track. Consequently, a rough extimate would lead to that the Koenigsegg CC-R can acheive a top speed of over 400 km/h on a straight track. However there are problems with this since Volswagen owns the Ehra Leissen test track and they have their own supercar in sight: the Bugatti Veyron. Also they have claimed that this 1000 HP car will reach over 400 km/h in top speed and I would be very surprsied if the would let Koenigsegg in to the facilites to claim the first price for production cars after the small-series Dauer 962. So sadly my guess is that we won't see any Ehra Leissen tests before VW launches their continously delayed Bugatti Veyron 16.4 which goal is to break the 400 km/h barrier on a non-oval track.
But the numbers speaks for Koengisegg:

The tyres are approved for speeds exceeding 400 km/h if you should decide to leave the Prototipo in Nardo and find some stretches.

The creator of the McLaren F1 Gordon Murray told this in an interview a few years back:

JB: What about the Edonis and Koenigsegg?

GM: You almost can’t count cars like the Edonis and Koenigsegg. With the Zonda you have to take the car seriously – the quality’s not bad, he’s selling the cars, people are driving them and using them and liking them. When there are 50 Edonises driving around and people are saying ‘This is good’, I’ll consider it a proper motorcar.

JB: The Koenigsegg is aiming for 250mph, too.

GM: People never learn lesson one, which is ‘don’t shout your mouth off before you’ve built the car’. Before the 1989 world crash there was an article in Road & Track, ’24 supercars you can buy’ and I think the only ones that actually arrived were us, the Jag and the Bugatti – three out of 24. With the Koenigsegg they’re talking about a horsepower figure and top speed for which you need a Cd of about 0.17 or something. It doesn’t add up. You shouldn’t do that. We didn’t say anything about our motorcar – nobody knew it was going to be middle seat until the launch – we just shut up and built it and then let people drive it.

Production of the McLaren F1 drew to a close in May 1998, with a total production of 100 cars, made up as follows:

Repeated 380+ km/h runs places alot of stress on all parts of the car, not at least the front of the car.

This air-intake gurantees rich air-flow to the oilcooler and intercooler. It is afterwards ventilated out through the rear outlet panel. Since the intake is placed slightly higher than the outlet some in functions also to provide some additional downforce.

The three circular lights resembles the design of the front lights.

Full leather and Alcantara even in the record breaking car. Racing seat and rollcage were installed for added safety.

The interiour of the record car with the adddition of some temporary instruments for the record run. My guess is that the single-digit display on top is to show which gear is chosen. The blue display (MPM Dashlogger) shows speed, lambda, exhaust-temperature and more. It also logs all values.

Interestingly the Koenigsegg CC-R have been produced in all of the above colours except the two most far away (thankfully). Many of the first CC-R delivered to consumers were in the 4th orange-like colour counting from above since that was the colour of the official premiere CC-R at Geneva 2004. Se more pictures of that car on this link. At least the first four CC-R were produced in that orange colour but now they have been produced in all colours featured above.

I took a closer look on the deep blue metallic and then I noticed that all the colour samples where painted on carbpn parts naturally, sicne the Koenigsegg is made completely out of carbon.

Please read about our coverage of Alpina from the Frankfurt Salon 2003 here and the 2004 Geneva Salon here. New for this year was the launch of the Alpina B5, a more comfort oriented alternative to the BMW M5. This car has the engine from the 7-series based Alpina B7 which has a supercharged 4,4 liter V8 producing 500 HP and a torque of 700 Nm.

The Alpina B5 is an entirely different concept than the M5 but with similar performance. Since BMW Alpina is not bound by the 250 km/h contract the Alpina B5 is according to Alpinas own brochures the fastest 4-door car in the world doing an impressive 314 km/h in top speed. The B5 is only available in with Switch-Tronic automatic. It is also available in Touring version and is then limited to a top speed of 300 km/h. This is because of the shape of the Touring permits it of travelling faster than 300 km/h as safe as the B5 Limousine.

The Alpina Blue B5 Touring has the silver Alpina deco-set.

The B5 Touring reached 100 km/h in 4,9 s compared to the B5 Limousine that reaches it in 4,7 s. The B5 has a 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

The classic Alpina 20 spokes wheels still looks very good. Alpina has been very true to their heritage for over 30 years. The B5 stops from 200 km/h in 5,5 s which is a distance just over 300 m. The brake discs are 374 mm in front and 370 mm in the rear. The brakes are from the BMW 760Li.

Traditional twin exhaust pipes even on the B5 Touring. Alpina has received alot of demands for quad exhaust pipes from customers but such kind of modification cannot be justified on a technological nor economical basis.

The B5 Touring's interiour is in blue and white leather with the blue parts in the exclusive Lavalina leather and the seating surfaces in BMW Dakota leather. Price is around €7000 for this leather combination and roughly €9000 for a complete interiour in Alpina Lavalina leather.

The + and - signs on the steerign wheel indicates on which side you shift gears for the Shift-Tronic. No M Mode buton here and no Launch Control either.

Notice the white stitching on the blue leather and the Dakota BMW leather in white. Leather Dakota in Alpina design (with Alpina emblems on the seats) is standard for the B5.

The Alpina B5 has a surprisingly low rev-limiter if you are used to M cars and the high-revving concept. However with a fundamentaly different engine concept. Notice that it is the first time that Alpina exchanges the fuel consumption meter below the rev-limiter to a engine oil temperature dial. This procedure har BMW M done since the first generation E30 M3. On the M635 CSi and the first generation M5 E28 the "econometer" was simply removed and no other dial there. BMW M or Alpina owners should not have to worry about fuel consumption even though the B5 is almost as frugal as the 545i if driven carefully.

You will never find carbon panels in Alpina cars. You will always find leather and exclusive wood materials.
Alpina have always cared for the details. Notice the silver Alpina emblem and the attention to detail. The picture of the gold Alpina logo highest up on this page is found on the decor wood panel on the center console in every Alpina.

A radial compressor delivers the boost pressure that is belt driven by the crankshaft. The radial compressor never stops spinning so there is minimal time lag when power is required. At 2500 rpm the engien has only 200 HP and at these partial loads on the engine the engine works as if it were normally aspirated using the full functionality ofthe Valvetronic engine along with a modest fule-consumption. At 5500 rpm there is 500 HP up to 6000 rpm. Between 4250 rpm and 5250 rpm a torque of 700 Nm is acessable.

Notice the huge radiator that Alpina manage to hide discreetely behind the front.

The rear differential looks familiar, could be the same as the M5 and M6.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres does not have a problem of withstanding speeds well over 300 km/h real speed. 245/40 ZR19 in front and 275/35 ZR19. Slightly higher diameter on the tyres is for added comfort.

Here is the steering wheel. Norice the incredible attention to detail with colourmatched threads on the button as well as the steering wheel, matching the rest of the interiour.

The bicoulored interiour in Alpina Lavalina leather on all surfaces is around €9000 compared to €7000 for partial Alpina Lavalina interiour as seen on the B5 Touring.

Switch-Tronic and the B5 is only available in automatic. However the high-torque supercharged engine seems to be best matched for the car.

The facelifted Alpina B7 in Alpinablue with silver deco-set

The B7 is the first BMW to be offered by Alpina within a month of the release of a facelift. As you see above the facelift incorporates new front and rear lights as well as a redesigned diffuser.

However, despite the controversioal design of the base car, the 7-series E65, the BMW Alpina B7 have sold over 200 examples since the introduction in the spring of 2004 and 160 cars have been delivered. The predecessor the B12 5,7 and B12 6,0 sold in total of 296 between December 1995 and July 2001. Of these were 202 B12 5,7 and 94 of the B12 6,0. The B12 6,0 had 430 HP V-12 and 600 Nm of torque from this normally aspirted 750i based engine.

A more discreet look that goes better with the traditional BMW designs.

The Alpina Blue is unmistakebly a deep and rich colour that have been offered for over 25 years and is still todayone of the most beautiful colous there is for BMW Alpinas. Timeless.

The new headlights are sleeker and less pronounces "eyebrows".
