Hi all,

Whilst no doubt the M5 is faster, I had a run a couple of weeks back with an M5 and I was surprised at how close it was.

Up to around 100mph I was only a couple of car lengths behind - mine is an Auto, and I'm pretty sure the M5 had an aftermarket exhaust.

Was pretty happy with my old girl! :)

Hi Gustav,

I was in the car driving and I saw what happened, as I said the M5 is no doubt faster - but I was very surprised as to how fast the 540 was. It was a 30mph to 100mph or so run - he was only around 2-3 lengths in front. Either he couldn't drive, or his car was sick (which is certainly didn't sound! :) ) - or my car is a freak.

Have you driven one? they go very well - I had a race to 160mph with an M-Coupe some time back and the 540 was quite a long way ahead. M-Coupe owner was shocked. ;)

I raced a 540i with my M3 3,2 in the rain form start to 220 km/h. Pretty even below 100 km/h but then I left him. But you are right, it is not 10 car lengths we are talking here. But race him to 250 km/h and youll see a big difference.

Yes - I agree, up to top speed would be quite different (but it is pretty rare that you will have a run up to top speed with someone on the street :) ).
