I've heard that you can throw a 525 box into an M5 if you have the SLS deleted, as I do. The advantage being that you don't have the SLS pump, so it's a bit cheaper and less maintenance/hoses/fluid. However, I couldn't find that older article, and am wondering if you experts have any input? Mine steering box is leaking pretty badly.

The SLS system runs off the PAS pump, the box has the same connections regardless. Besides the ratio's are different anyway, can't the leak be fixed?

What is PAS? And I'm not sure if the leak can be fixed, I haven't checked it out very closely yet. I wouldn't want something with a different steering ratio.

PAS is the Power Assisted Steering pump which supplies the steering box and the SLS system, its under the alternator.

as above, the box has a different ratio, and the steering boxes have nothing to do with sls vs no sls. That's the pump. I believe you can not use a different pump, due to bracketry etc. Look for wout's "major wrenching" thread from a few years ago, i thought it looked into this.

525i steering box has a bigger ratio so your steering would be slower after the change. Can't the box be repaired at a specialist?

I'm not sure, but I'd be the one doing the repairs... It's not that bad, I'll probably just end up leaving it be.
