If the 3.8 was such a leap forward why did these long term owners not move to a 3.8 ?
Because a nice E34 M5 is a nice E34 M5 whether it is 3.6 or 3.8. The condition of the car is more important than whether it is a 3.6 or a 3.8. That said I was fortunate to get a very nice 3.8. Knock on wood, apart from the normal ( expensive ) servicing I haven't had anything go wrong except the OBC bong and the high concentration screen washer unit ( which I think is a loose connection somewhere underneath the dash ).
You'd be hard to notice the difference until you get to illegal speeds when the 3.8's extra power makes a difference.
Also the 3.8 is that bit younger than the 3.6 which is in it's favour.
