Are you kidding? Too many gates for the shifter. The issue is not gears, it's manually rowing the shifter without selecting the wrong gear (unless the overall shift gate width grows to become the width of a fat girls's, well you know...)

Since there are human physical limits to how fast a manual can be shifted, the fewer shifts, the faster the overall acceleration provided you stay in the torque band. The F10 TT V-8 should have a flat/fat torque band compared to the S85 V-10, so no worries, a 6 speed manual will be fine for those who want to only go a little slower than in a SMG or DCT equipped car. An 8 speed manual in an M5 would be ridiculous and no faster in a straight line.

I'm glad BMW listens and is again offering a manual in the M5. I wouldn't get one, but I'm still glad that those who want one will have the option.
