I picked up my package from Patryk today which contained a pre-programmed CIC for my VIN. On hand I already had the new LCI style Climate Controls and the set of 3 North America DVDs.

I know that Nelson already has a thread on this retrofit, but I figured I'd go ahead and create another one specifically for a swap into an M5 and also provide some different pictures that Nelson did not publish in his excellent thread.

Here's the package from Patryk. It arrived in excellent condition, especially give the distance it traveled to get to me.

And here are all the goodies spread out on the table:

Next up was pulling the trim off:

A shot of the back of the CCC with all wires still attached:

After complete removal of old CCC components:

CCC vs. CIC backs. The orange connector on the CIC is not connected to anything once installed.

CIC cables test fitted on bench:

My old center trim before seperation:

Lower center trim seperated from upper. I broke all the tabs, but they are fortunately not used with the new upper center trim:

Next up was pulling the pins from the power connector from the old display. Here's the old connector:

After transferring to new connector:

Different angle showing the pin-outs:

Routing USB cable to glove box. I used the same hole that the OEM iPod adapter uses:

Completed:

CIC with all wires connected just before being installed. Note that the cable to the old display and the power for the CCC cooling fan are not used with the CIC.

CIC installed:

Old vs. new Climate Controls:

New Climate Controls installed along with center trim:

Finally a set of shots showing some M5 specific screens on the fancy new display:

Only issue right now is that I'm still using the old iDrive controller and no matter how slow I turn it, I'm taken from the top selection to the bottom selection and visa versa. I have not heard of this issue from others. Perhaps it is unique to '06 models or M5s, or just my particular car? Anyway, that just might be the excuse I need to go ahead and complete the swap by getting the new controller!

AWESOME JOB on the INSTALLATION. Your pics looks great!! WELCOME to the CIC Retrofit CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the controller. Hoping it something that Patryk can fix with Coding.

Thanks Nelson!

And I really appreciate the call to set me straight on the power connector for the display. Patryk was also quick to PM me as well with the pin outs.

I PM'ed him about the iDrive as well. I will need to get an interface cable if the fix requires programming. I'll need that anyway to get my folding mirrors fold/unfold when I lock/unlock the car. :haha:

I'm following this with interest, as I don't intend to buy a newer M5 anytime soon (how about adding a 1M coupe instead and keeping the old M5) but would like a better I-drive interface. I am still fairly confused about all of the differences though. I can't seem to find a comprehensive set of information. A bunch of random posts with parts of the information exist, but nothing really puts it all together for me. For example, isn't the nav now hard-drive based, so why the need for the DVD set? etc...

Nelson, I haven't tried because I don't think I can load the maps until I get the controller working correctly. Reason being that I'll need to enter the code after putting in DVD 1, which I don't think I'll be able to do given the way my controller acts right now.

I might give it a shot though, you never know.

It is, but one has to load the maps onto the hard-drive initially for the region they drive in. In a new vehicle with a CIC, this task would be done at some point prior to delivery, but when doing the retrofit, you have to do this yourself. The DVD set itself only cost 7 bucks. The code needed to load the maps will set you back around $200. One would need to go through this proceedure each year for the latest maps.

Drove the car to work this morning and uncovered some additional issues:

* A/C compressor never comes on even though the LCI climate control otherwise appear to function correctly
* The engine cooling fan is on permanently
* Internal DVD drive cannot read CD or DVDs
* I need to change units from Metric to Standard

I'm confident that the above issues can be fixed by some additional coding tweaks once Patryk connects to my car.

I'm also going to take the car to the dealer to get the latest software installed. I need to be at v32 at least in order for the iDrive controller to function properly.

Sort of unrelated but can one change the climate control from old to new? are they just plug and play? Are your issues coming from the coding of the entire new CIC unit or just the climate control knobs?

Peter-

You can change the KM and temperature setting by going to the settings menu and clicking on language/units sub menu.

Im also replying to this thread so that M5 owners that dont visit the e60.net site would know whats going on.

Thanks Nelson.

I have been PM'ing back and fourth with Patryk.

He's pretty sure that my controller issue is due to me running a software version less than v32.

Thanks Nelson.

I have been PM'ing back and fourth with Patryk.

He seems to think that the issue with the controller is that I need to get the dealer to upgrade my software (to update the controller) I'm not sure what version I'm on, but I'll try to find out. Is the latest v3.1? The FAQ seems to be dated as it stopped at v2.6 which dates back to 2007.

He also feels that upgrading to the new controller should fix the issue as well.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Peter
Peter-
Im with Patryk about the software issue. I know some e90post members had issues when they were trying just to retrofit the new controller with the CCC. After an software update they were able to get it to work.

There's was a major change on BMW electronics around 2007 and thats why i think you need the update. I Know for regular e60 owners who software as of 04/09 was V33.006

According to Patryk, the latest version is v3.8. He states that I should be on at least version v3.2 for the controller to work correctly.

Got a call into the dealer to schedule an appointment.

If it turns out that I am on a version older than 3.2, would this be one of those times when I should put in the old CCC before having the upgrade done?

I don't see why you could not change just the climate control, but you would need the correct LCI trim to match.

I believe my main issue is due to me running a software version prior to v3.2. That and the fact that the CIC is in metric mode right now. At least I hope those are the issues.

I'm going to swap my old climate control back in to see if the AC and engine cooling fan issues goes away.

Correct. They won't be able to do the update with the CIC.

I went ahead and scheduled dropping my ride off at the dealer Thursday morning to get my software updated.

I picked up an interface cable from Patryk so that he can log in and get the outstanding issues squared away, like me not being able to read CD or DVDs, and hopefully the odd behavior when I use the LCI climate control.

I'm also getting the new iDrive controller and trim pieces. Even though I'm hopeful that the software upgrade will make my current controller work, I'd still like to make the conversion complete.

I'm going to look around for a local outfit that offers water jet CNC service to have my existing center console trim cut for the new controller. That is likely the most cost effective route.

So I converted back to the CCC unit tonight and everything is back to working the way it was before this experiment began. All I had to do was to reset the clock and date.

Awesome job. We all appreciate this thread as well as the original thread by Nelson. You are probably the first person who is going to put in the new i-drive controller in the M5. If it all goes well, a lot of people are going to consider doing this mod. I hope it all goes smoothly at the dealership.
