Looks like a number of 08's are continuing to come off of lease- and while I am all for dealers making a profit, I would like to get a good idea of what E60's are selling for wholesale. Specifically, Im interested in wholesale or even trade-in pricing for a fully loaded 08'. I'm hearing some dealers say they are paying low 40's wholesale and other say they are paying upper 40's. With that- I'm seeing prices of mid/low 40's (yes, i have seen one up north fully loaded with 41k miles/ non-cpo for $42.7) and I am seeing them locally for the same cars retail at mid/ low 50's (even when they have come off lease for the same car)Anyone have access to this data?? It would obviously be "huge" in the potential buyers hands.I understand there are TONS of other data points that go into purchase- but knowing these would be great. As always- thanks guys!

wholesale sales in the high 30's to low 40's....plus auction fees, plus reconditioning parts, service...gets you to mid/high 40's...the used car market has hardened and prices have stabilized and even gone up for this car

My dealer wants $50K for my 08 M5. Car is fully loaded(SMG) and I'm the only owner. Is this a good deal?

Sorry, I should have been more elaborate. I'm considering buying out my M5 off lease, instead of going to the F10 550 (which I have also been strongly considering). Residual is $59K, but that doesn't really mean much for purposes of this transaction. Based on Manheim, the loyalty fee that BMW charges back to the dealer if I buy it off lease and a very slight mark-up, I'm thinking $50K is decent??

If I return my car, I will not consider buying another used one, as I know M drivers ride their cars very hard I don't want to have issues down the road (CPO or not). Knowing the history of my own car is worth an additional mark-up, just for peace of mind.

I have 32K miles on the car.

Not to take away from this topic, but this is why I was strongly considering the F10 550 instead...

This is member John/Glock's F10 550. He recently added new wheels and lowered it. He came from a 2008 M5 as well and has no regrets. However, it's still not an M and he definitely misses the sound of V10 engine.

If you scroll through this thread, you'll see the transformation from wheels to being lowered. I have to say this car looks stunning! But I think I still like how my M5 looks more.

That does seem like a pretty strong price given the fact that it's always been "your" M. Further, it's less than the residual- so in essence, you've saved a little bit of money as compared to buying it outright when you began the lease.

Knowing that wholesale prices are in the mid- 40's for a vehicle I'd say a 5K premium to keep your car and not buy some else's is a no brainer.

Now the question is....how was the F10 550? And what will you want to do when the F10 M arrives?

Do you know what the loyalty fee is that BMW charges back to the dealer if the buyer decided to purchase off lease? I've heard $3k - $4k, which is non-negotiable. Basically, this fee is what BMW charges so they don't take it in the pants for someone that's interested in buying off lease, but obviously won't pay residual. If that is the case, then the mark-up is pretty minimal which would make sense, as I've sent many customers their way over the years, they love my loyalty and all the BMW's I've leased from them and I always get my new leased cars pretty close to invoice. However, I've never done it this way. I asked for a better breakdown of numbers and should get them tomorrow.

C's Bimmer - I think the number is much lower without the required BMW backend fees. When a friend of mine was looking he was offered a 1K over off-lease purchase which was less than residual on an 08 M5. It was a 41K car but it wasn't his color that he wanted otherwise it would have been a done deal. It was offered to me which I passed on to him due to the fact the dealership didn't want to take this car in but they are required to buy back the car if it was purchased and returned to the same dealership. They said the M5's sit longer on the lot due to its niche market. So I do not think they have a 3-4K charge back as this was not what I was presented and I saw the real numbers.

Are you considering just keeping your car now? I know you extended the lease once right?

The prices for these cars are all over the board lately. I saw an 06 for 33K and then an 06 for 39K roughly the same mileage but I know that doesn't tell the whole story. The 08's with 40K or under in colors like White, SilverGray demand a higher number than Sapphire and Red. No offense to those who have Sapphire or Red :) Just speaking from a market demand perspective.

A few on autotrader and cars.com with lower mileage Alpine Whites are in the upper 40's to low 50's still.

The surge for these cars have actually gone up. If the price of fuel dropped to something steady around high $2's then I think the used market would move on the M5's. When buying new one can say if you are spending $100K on a car what does the price of fuel have anything to do with it but in a used market that question is very relevant and important to the pre-owned buyer.

This is great to know. I read on another thread (can't remember if it was this board or not) where someone mentioned something about this "loyalty fee". I'll find out more tomorrow, as I asked for a breakdown in numbers.

I am considering it very strongly. I have been up late at night, tossing and turning, annoying my wife and spending way too much time going back and forth as to what I should do. I like the new F10 550, but it still seems like a downgrade. It's also not as raw feeling, which I love about my M5. Granted, the new F10 has all the new bells and whistles and is very refined, but it's still not the same (even in Sport +).

On top of that, when I left the dealership today an E39 M5 drove by and I loved staring at it. It was a 2000 and I said to myself, "Geez, if that car could do this to me 11 years later, my car easily will have a similar appeal in 3-4 years, right?". LOL! It's been pretty funny going back and forth on this decision, lining up the pro's and con's and still unsure what to do. My wife is sick of it though. Ha!

Tomorrow will be the day I decide. Stay tuned...

I also say to myself, I can just see it now where I'm on the road next year and an F10 M5 and E60 M5 pass on by and here I am stuck in my 550 which is just blah. LOL! The problem with going to an M is that once you do, it's hard going to anything else within the brand...especially when we're talking about an M5 of all M's. I guess it's my own fault. ;-)

I suspect this "loyalty fee" (which is added to the actual fair market value purchase price, NOT added if you buy at the residual) is a mechanism used by BMWFS to keep the dealers honest. Otherwise the dealers would scheme to try to set an artificially high residual and tell customers "you can just buy at FMV at the end of the lease."

It also keeps the dealers honest in setting the FMV purchase price. If they could CPO the car back to you for less than the residual and all the loss came out of BMWFS's hide, it would happen with every car.
