Hi everybody, I am starting to swap a 2006 S85/SMG Trany combo into a 2004 E46. I plan to use the original M5 Harness, Steering/Pad Shift, Cluster,ECUs etc. from RHD E60 into the RHD E46. I also have a LHD complete 2006 M5 (minus engine block) as spares. Soliciting diligent and helpful comments from members here with expertise on the subject matter/technical aspects thankfully in advance. Economical/financial aspects are being decided already , hence no comments needed in this regard (not to waste everybody's' time). Posting some pics below so you know, I am in earnest (not a fantacy project). Thanx again for all relevant comments from all/any member here with greetings from Japan.

I know it has been done before. There was a convertible E46 M3 with a S85 swap for sale here NJ last year. He was asking $65k and it looked amazing. It looked like it came from the factory like that.

As far as help goes, I'm sorry I have 0 expertise in this field but I'm definitely watching this thread closely.

I remember someone dumping a S85 into an E30 back in the day. That thing was nuts!
I remember that! Didn't Gustav have a few videos up on here of that car??

No.1 piece of advice? Dump the MSS_65 DME and SMG3 control.

There are so many interactions between the DME, DSC, ABS, Idle actuators, SMG, CAS, EWS, PDC (just kidding...maybe) that coding/programming/hacking the DME is challenging enough (although some prior work exists here in the public domain), and modifying the SMG programming for those other modules would likely cost more labor than any aspect of the mechanical work.

The Pectel SQ6 will work nicely with the S85 and they have a standalone transmission controller that can communicate with the SQ6 for smoother operation.

I researched this quite a bit in the last year or so for a potential Ultima GTR build (see here for a build by AutoBionics).

I've also emailed a bit with a gent in Germany from the Pistonheads forum who is working on a an S85 Ultima and one of his challenges is the SQ6 control of the idle and throttle actuators. He is likely using a custom microcontroller in between the SQ6 and the idle/throttle actuators to convert the SQ-6 single throttle output into the two-stage PT-CAN signal for the idle and throttle actuators (remember, the idle actuators open fully before the throttle actuators crack open the butterfly valves.

The SQ6 is also capable of running the S85's ionic current system.

Good luck in your build, please document and post everything here! (we're greedy like that)

I own a 2005 e46 330i ZHP 6spd 4dr which spends most of the time sitting under a car cover as I drive my M5 most of the time. But every time I get back in the e46 and take it for a spin I'm always amazed at how great of a car it is. It's such a fun little thing. Now if it had the S85 under the hood...oh boy oh boy.

Someday i'd love to swap in a s85 into the ZHP, it would really wake it up. :)

Please please keep updating this thread with your build, lots of pictures!!

Jim, Thanx sooooooo very much for the input. Not yet decided here, as to the best way to deal with the final coding, programming / electronics. Looking/asking around during the installation/fabrication process to find the best way around. Your expertise/knowledge/experience would be much appreciated in time to come. Greets frm Japan.

Call/text me. I have been involved in over a dozen swaps of S85 into anything from E21 Bauer to an E92 M3. I can share some contacts with you.

Taking on your kind offer.

Hi TROY JEUP, Thanx for your offer and I am ready to get your advice/help/contacts/opinion/suggestion, at this stage of my project as per the link below,

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-touring-discussion/379249-2006-s85-smgiii-swap-into-2004-e46-started-any-helpful-comments-2.html I have installed the S85 and SMGIII in the E46 chassis successfully. Now it is the wiring, programming etc. Could you advise/lead me to do this part successfully and economically pls?? My contact info in www.shopcarpro.com, I remain thankfully in advance. Will call if no response shortly. Cheers.

Have a look at this E46 swap in Australia. Alex is getting along quite well with his build. I just sent him some parts to help out, but I'm not sure if he's doing his own electrical or has someone doing it for him.
