Looking for advice on this fault...

I am getting the error on the iDrive screen that the DSC has failed and the car will drive in low power mode. However....if i switch off the ignition before even turning the engine it may go!

I have replaced the battery and undergone a software update to attempt to fix this problem.

The usual pattern for this is....Drive car to work in the morning (all fine)... 2hours later goto the car to drive somewhere (fault appears)...drive only 1 mile in limp mode...stop car...wait 30 seconds...start car and fault goes.

As it's so predictable now I am almost adapting my lifestyle around this crazy problem!

But what is wrong? Is it a mechanical failure or a sensor?

Anyone else had this? Its been nearly 2 months now and my beast needs to be repaired :grrrrr:

Possibly the throttle actuators are faulty, there's 2 and in certain riving styles (hight gear, low speed small throttle opening) they can over heat and fail, there was a software update to try and solve the problem where the ECU sweeps the actuator but the damage could already be done as I see you had a software update.

I agree with Hasan,

Scan away, just remember there is likely loads of spurious codes as well! The steering angle sensor should have been sorted as part of a recall I think but I could be wrong, there was certainly a bulletin on it from BMW.

Anyway, good luck and don't pay mad dealer prices for parts, source them your self and get them to fit if your not happy with a competent BMW indy!?

After reading reams of info here I am thinking Steering Angle sensor too, for these reasons..

1. My idle and acceleration is always smooth.
2. The fault condition only appears when starting the ignition (before turning the engine).

Having looked at the vehicle service history that I was given from my local dealer I see that the previous owner had the following job done under warranty.

Date: 19.09.2007
Mileage: 45.038 miles

Defect Code 6590021800 Navigation CD/DVD road map / description input. Incorrect/incomplete reading.

Labour Code 6100811 Programming/encoding control unit(s) (with CAS)
Labour Code 6120908 Performing battery "power reset"
Labour Code 3611500 Initialising tyre failure indicator
Labour Code 6131996 Adjusting steering angle sensor
Labour Code 6100850 Setting Compressor inlet
Labour Code 6100830 Initialising sunroof and power windows
Labour Code 3452900 Performing DSC adjustment

I guess from this info the steering angle sensor was not replaced, simply adjusted?

If there was a recall on this component, then it seems my car did not get it.

I would suggest you get the steering angle sensor replaced if don't have to pay for it.

Since you are getting the reduced power with the DSC malfunction, it might be something else. A full scan of the fault memory in necessary for proper diagnosis.
Reduced Power would suggest something other than the steering angle sensor, but with all the interrelated systems a scan should be your next step.

If your turn signals sometimes do not reset, this is another indication of problems with the steering angle sensor :lightbulb:

Out of Warranty...So I will pay for everything! Hence the reason on here to research and predict which parts and what price I must pay!

A Diagnostic scan will give me direction to the actual fault!
Had a M5 last week with the same fault on the I drive, what was happening is that after after diving the car 30 min and then switching the engine off and back on again the DCS and engine fail safe warning came on! after scanning the car it showed throttle actuator bank 2 at fault!
So just to be 100% it was the throttle actuator at fault we swapped actuator bank 2 to bank 1.
Road tested the car hence the fault showed again, scanned the the fault and this time it showed bank 1.
This ment that the fault had transferred to bank 1 hence faulty throttle actuator!
New Actuator on order!
It looks like you have the same issue! but scan the car and let us know what the diagnostic report says!
Hope this helps!

Great Tip, Many Thanks. Can I ask....Did you have any issues with idle and or acceleration? As my problem sounds identical to yours but the car drives smoothly all the time and idles fine. The fault only appears after I have made my first drive of the day, and only before I start the engine, never during the running of the engine.

Here's a vid of my DSC Malfunction:

Dealer just replaced steering angle sensor and battery, so I guess need to tell them to replace the throttle actuator too!
Since you are getting the reduced power fault, I would guess that the throttle actuator needs to be replaced. But a scan of fault memory should be able to confirm this.

However, should they decide to replace the throttle actuator, ask them to replace both of them.

Good Luck!

Just come back from a nice day's drive in the M5. Not one problem today :3:

A friend of mine runs a small garage/workshop and his snap-on diagnostic tool extracted the fault codes from the car.
I have attached a photo of the codes.

As can be seen Bank 1 is to blame.....can I ask....facing the engine, is Bank 1 the Left or right hand side?

(Jaguar V8's have Bank 1 on the right as the first cylinder is on the right hand side, as I suspect is the case here on the M5)

UK Cars are right hand drive, however Bank1 is the left hand side facing the engine?

To replace both these...is a matter of simply removing the black plastic covers...unplug the wiring and remove the fixing bolts,

They appear to be very easy to access or am I missing something?

That is correct, bank 1 is the left side if you are facing the engine.

You are absolutely spot on. Replacing the throttle actuators is no biggie. :)

Good Luck!

Many Thanks Hasan, what are your thoughts on re-manufactured units?

BMW-M5-Throttle-Actuator

I have been quoted from BMW ÂŁ700 (4000 AED) for each throttle actuator, or the above company will (they say) fix my existing ones for ÂŁ150 (857 AED) each plus postage.

No way would I pay 700 smackers for a new one, I would get the same company to refurb your old ones!
These guys are professionals at what they do!
All they replace in the actuator is the plastic gears that over time wear and start to slip!

I am struggling to find anyone who stocks these apart from the stealers! Anyone else in UK can advise?

ÂŁ1400 for two parts is taking the P!!!!

HI Shak,
really hope you can help me.
I have read all the posts about DSC malfunctions on my E60 M5

It brought this error up a few weeks ago, but was driveable.
I replaced one with brand new BMW part, and still got the code.
So i ordered another ( getting quite good at swapping them out now )

In the meantime the car is running very rough, and it appears that the K&N filters have killed the MAFs.
New MAFS on the way now too.

However, today i replaced the second actuator with the second brand new one.
car still has DSC Malfunction !

HELP
Much appreciated if you could advise anything it all, so disappointed only had the car 1 month!

I did scan, but my "scan guage" pulled no codes, and only recently came up with U1136 and now has added P0308.
I couldnt find any posts which referred to a code for the actuator failure, but so many members had reported that this fixed the DSC reduced power fault, i thought that must be it.

It seems i was incorrect, and im kicking myself for not buying a decent code reader first.
Originally when it had the DSC error the U1136 didnt exist and the car ran smoothly, but obviously could lose a drag race to a granny in her corolla.
So 2 new actuators and still DSC reduced power, and these DSC errors dont clear when i clear ALL codes.
