Did you read the EWS docs? Specifically where the codes are stored. It is not just in the ews module and keys...

I work on car for a living and ran into several ews issue and I know it looks at the prndl switch for an input if it’s not in park or if the switch is bad that car will not crank or start. Also if the transmission control module is dead no communication there will also be a start issue. That’s not the only input it looks at looks at several. If you program for no ews that would be your best bet and go from there
Do you have or know of a walk through to delete the ews? I have inpa, ncsexpert, winkp, bmwflash and the inpa/dcan cable.

I am trying to use bmwflash, it says connection successful, but then just sits there when trying to download the full rom. I let it sit for over 20 minutes. I also tried to both download full rom file and the read one.
On the read one. 2% downloads, then asks where do I want to save it, then gives me the error file size is incorrect.
I am able to read the dme using INPA.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Try using MSSFlasher - I find it more reliable.

Yes.
This isn’t for the faint hearted though.
Make 100% sure you know what you are doing.
On the mssflasher, do I still need to download a program to modify the .bin file, such as ecuworx?

Thank you.

ECUWorx, or a hex editor if you know what you're doing. If you don't, spend the 20(?) quid on ECUWorx...

Tried using mssflasher - got the following:

941237

Do I need to use INPA and synchronize the EWS and DME? (Even though the DME is from a M5, and the EWS is from a 540i).

Thanks

Because I’ve answered here, I’ll continue to do so, rather than in the other forums you’ve cross posted in.

Because you have an M5 DME (with no key) in a 540i you cannot align the M5 DME to the 540i EWS.

See 8) in Geargrinders fabulous post here:-

Because the engine cranks with the 540i key and EWS it means all you need to do (and actually can do with what you have) is disable the EWS in the M5 DME (MSS52).

What cable are you using?
This is the most likely reason you’re having communication problems.
I find that if I can open INPA and communicate with the DME, you can then close INPA and open MSSFLASHER and it will work.

If you still have problems, you may need to send your DME to someone.

Yes, I am able to open INPA and it communicates with the DME. The same with MSSFlasher. BMWFlash says it communicates, but will not download file. The cable I am using is INPA / Ediabas K+DCAN USB Interface Diagnostic OBD Test Line Scanner DIS. I got the link from BMW Doctor when I was watching on how to use INPA and NCSExpert.

Thank you.

What cable would you recommend? I am starting to think that is my main issue.
You need a cable with a genuine FTDI FT232R chip.
I’m not sure where you are, I’m assuming USA.

The Build Journal recommend this one:-

However, this one is guaranteed to work:-

If you’re in Europe, I’d recommend this one:-

It’s got to be a problem with your car/DME.
I was using both MSSFlasher and BMWFlash the other day on my car with both my laptops - XP and Win10 without any problems.
Have you disconnected your battery and charged it up fully?
Do you know anyone with an E39 M5 or E46 M3 that you can try reading their DME with your setup?

It maybe a custom build and maybe encrypted. Going to retry using WinKFP and flashing it and go back to stock version. Fingers crossed.
