    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
I ran some more tests after the last post, namely flushed my fluid again and filled more mtl into it and that raised my pump fail point to 75C, so I figured that it wasn't the sensor at that point. So I ordered a set of seals from ebay and replaced them last night, it's not a very huge job...

How has the BBB steering rack been behaving? I need to replace my rack too and I'm considering ordering this one as well.

Unfortunately I can't find any on ebay. I'm going to run some more tests and if i can be more sure it's the sensor then I'll just order a new one. If not then I have a pump kit coming friday, I can always rebuild the pump and if it still happens then I have no other culprits remaining.

I'll go for a drive tomorrow to get the temps up and try to record this, but there's definitely an audible change in rpm, kind of like how it normally drops in frequency as the pressure climbs.

Here's a crazy thought, I was just monitoring the pump as it stalls out at 65 bar once it hits 75C+ and i noticed something strange. Pump kicks on at say 53bar and runs until 65bar then stalls and keeps running BUT; after the pressure reading stalls, the motor rpm keeps dropping as if pressure...

time column that testo outputs is ms from the start of the logging session, not a counter. so in your case it's 3.3 seconds, that's pretty quick. mine currently does about 5 seconds when cool.

Thanks for the logs, looks like your pump is much stronger than mine, I just ordered the $100 pump seal set from ebay, hopefully that'll solve my high temp pump issue, it not being able to build pressure above 73bar once temps go over ~60C. Reason I think it's the pump now that I switched to a...

How long of a drive did you go on to get your fluid up to 45? because after a 20 minute highway drive my fluid will go up to 70C+, up until 40-50C mine doesn't bleed down too fast, but after that it gets so thin that the pump can no longer keep up. Testo does do SMGIII, you just have to add it...

so i pulled out the clutch solenoid, seemed just fine, so unless the solenoid itself is hosed guess that's not it. I'll remove the check valve tomorrow and see if maybe there's some dirt stuck in it.

well, the redline d4 atf doesn't use any friction modifiers, that's why i was thinking of that one. The fluid you used didn't specify a viscosity, just that it's thicker than 11s, I wonder what it would be comparable to.

Yeah my coating flaked off too, I actually asked MLR guy and he said it was normal, it was a teflon coating and would not cause any problems. Thanks, I'll see if I need o-rings, if so I'll shoot you a PM :) As for the oil, I wonder if a different oil, like maybe even D4 ATF could work, it's...

Thanks for the ideas, I unfortunately don't have a spare clutch solenoid to try. As for putting a clear hose on the return from the shift block, that's not a bad idea. I did grease up all the o-rings when intalling, MLREngineering provided a few tubes of grease for them, but who knows, maybe...

I just read over your thread, after rebuild my pressure still drops like a stone as you can see in my data logs. I'm thinking I have a leak either in the solenoid or the check valve. what do you think? Unless my actual clutch solenoid itself is just leaking like crazy. Did you refill your...

I finally got around to running a data logging session on the SMG while driving home the other day and got some interesting results https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRIJ6Nsdjjwf1vMCYbFPuzjlofxaqqygQaeYqTV29TryKt2GVvYMjR46h-LKNpKu-WtFbq8C-4-_wDk/pubhtml?gid=360372421&single=true...

Unfortunately I don't run/own a shop, at best I could offer advice if you have questions. There are others on this forum like jcolley or the MLReng.com guys who I'm sure will gladly help you perform a rebuild/refurb of your SMG3. In fact MLReng helped me at a bunch of points when I had...

So I finally got to drive the car a few times (about 100 miles) and I can report that so far the refurb has been a resounding success. The trans shifts so much smoother now since my throw out bearing isn't sticking and the shift solenoids are working flawlessly. I'm not seeing weird gear shift...

I wasn't going to document doing the actual clutch replacement or replacing the input/output shaft seals, but I figured I would at least document a few things that stumped me while I was doing it. First off, I replaced the motor Rear Main Seal which seals around the crank shaft at the back of...

Looks like I can no longer edit the previous post so here goes the piece about the pump/clutch block. Reassembling this is pretty simple, similarly to the shift actuator block you assemble the clutch solenoid from the small o-ring to the large one and slide it in after applying grease on the...

Haven't tried swapping the accumulator yet, Robert over at MLReng.com is sending me a used(known good) one to try, since I'm out of ideas at this point. What do you mean by the accumulator needing to be released? If you mean drop SMG hydraulic pressure, then yes, i tried dropping pressure and...

So I'm still pretty much stuck on why I can't get my actuator block to vent, but I'm now starting to think that it might have something to do with this: does that make sense? I don't get why it would be related since the system is coming up to full pressure but who knows. Does anyone know...
