  1. My 528 outhandles M5

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
If you have the M52 non-TU, then yeah, S52 is pretty much a direct swap. For M52TUs and especially M54s, the S54 electronics would be a better match, but it would still by no means be a straight forward swap. There is a thread on bimmerforums where a bunch of us discuss the feasibility and have...
  2. My 528 outhandles M5

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
It was likely more a money / development cost issue than aluminum not being strong enough. The e39 v8 front subframe is essentially lifted out of the e38, and is not too different from earlier 5ers/7ers. The I6 subframe was an all new development. With the E60, BMW went with a design similar to...
  3. Alternator Replacement choices

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
Digging through old wiring diagrams (earliest use of that voltage regulator appears to be E36 318 and E31 840i), I can't find any car that uses the 3rd pin
  4. Headlight leveling issue... can't find anything wrong

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
So it is pointing to an error for the front sensor, but it does also say "error currently not present" so I don't know for sure if that's your problem. Could be that it just hasn't detected it as a problem yet since you haven't been driving and the module doesn't have enough data for a...
  5. Headlight leveling issue... can't find anything wrong

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
I'd take those E39 source videos with a grain of salt. Having watched a couple of them, they really don't know much about how the electronics work. The reason their LWR didn't work is because the LCM wasn't coded for the car. If you code it for your car with NCS Expert, it will set everything in...
  6. Undervoltage and Red Battery Light plague

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
There’s a blurb in the wds somewhere that confirms what I got experimentally, but the battery light illuminates when the charging voltage is below 1/2 of the system voltage. You can have an essentially dead alternator without the light turning on. The controller on the alternator will also...
  7. Alternator Replacement choices

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
That pin on the DME is an input - the DME cannot switch anything there. If your test light turned off when hooked up, that means your alternator was not outputting voltage. I do not have an M5. I do have experience with them. And I have pretty extensive knowledge of the DMEs (and have several...
  8. Alternator Replacement choices

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
I've extensively disassembled the DME and rewrote some of the alternator code on the CSL version of the MSS54HP. And before you say it, in this case the code is equivalent between the MSS52/MSS54/MSS54HP. The DME has no capability of turning off the alternator. MAYBE the voltage regulator itself...
  9. Alternator Replacement choices

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
M5 alternator is only 120A, M54 alternators go up to 155A. The voltage regulator might be semi-smart, but the DME doesn't do any communication with it, it certainly doesn't turn it on and off on the E39 M5. The connection from the alternator to the DME is an output that the DME doesn't evaluate...
  10. Alternator Replacement choices

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
Nope. Physically it looks very similar to the I6 alternators.
  11. Alternator Replacement choices

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
So supposedly the M5 alternator fits the non-M I6, so perhaps the other way around would also work.
  12. Throttle pedal retrofit - Has anyone done this?

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
Assuming we’re talking about the floor mounted dbw pedals, the kickdown clicker is simply a button with no electrical action. The cars that have a kickdown function determine whether they should enter kickdown mode purely based on throttle position. The clicker is there purely for tactile...
  13. Throttle pedal retrofit - Has anyone done this?

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
So after more investigation, option B if you don't want to mess with the tune would be to get an automatic pedal, remove the kickdown clicker from inside, and use that. The voltage range on the automatic pedal is pretty close to what you see in a stock M5 by my calculations
  14. Throttle pedal retrofit - Has anyone done this?

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
The software pictured is TunerPro using an XDF built for the newest MSS52 program variants. If Alex is willing to do minor mods for you, he could probably figure out what to change based on my post alone. If you want to do it yourself, you'll need to read your tune from your DME, and then you'll...
  15. Throttle pedal retrofit - Has anyone done this?

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
So I was comparing the Z8 tune (which comes with the floor mounted DBW pedal) vs the E39 M5 tune, and found a couple values that you should probably change when upgrading pedals: For the K_PWG1_NORM parameter, I confirmed the Z8 value matches the E46 M3 value. I'm not sure what the map does...

The remote functionality has nothing to do with EWS. In any case, this procedure always worked for me:

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
I see you've switched over to Ghidra :)
  18. Well discussed topic - Rear Diff Oil

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
Castrol SAF-XJ does indeed have friction modifier in it. The 583 part number has more friction modifier. The 992 part number is likely the BMW branded version of this stuff: Castrol SAF-XJ 75w140 - 500 Ml I've been using the Castrol branded one in my M3 (which uses a similar diff to the M5)...
  19. Battery kill switch

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
The car should be able to handle 30 days without the battery dying
  20. Throttle pedal retrofit - Has anyone done this?

    E39 M5 and E52 Z8 Discussion
Yeah you need them because of the potential for water from wet shoes etc - and that connector style is meant to take the sealed contacts anyway. The pre-crimped wire linked to in the next post would work. Though at that point it might make more sense to grab as much of the wiring as you can off...
