  1. E60 M5 track thread

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
I may have been the first to track the e60 M5. Here are my track reports from 2007 (holy cow, 12 years ago! -- before I surrendered to the track bug, instructed, built a dedicated e36 M3 race car, and spent years racing with BMWCCA Club Racing (making the lap times mentioned in these early M5...

    Cars For Sale or Wanted
No aftermarket warranty. The SMG recall was done by my dealer when it was announced in June 2007, and the transmission (and the rest of the car) has functioned flawlessly ever since.

  5. Oil at .8 level. How much to add to not over fill?

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
Hey! Yes, have been too busy racing. Still have the M5 and can't seem to part with it. Hope you're well.
  6. Oil at .8 level. How much to add to not over fill?

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
8-1/2 years, 51,000 miles, and not a single problem adding one liter (no more, no less) when the car tells me I should add a liter. It's as simple and as reliable as that. Don't "top off," don't reset the oil measurement, don't overthink.
  7. Retiring E60 from track. Building E30 Pro3 Racer

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
There's a thread on the E63 M6 forum about guys being able to use 18" Apex ARC wheels. I use these wheels (in the 17" size) on my e36 M3 race car, and they are a great combination of strength and price. When I tracked my M5 (was one of the very first starting in 2006), I could not find an 18"...
  8. Ready For The Track (With 18's)

    E63/E64 M6 Discussion
Tire wear depends a lot on (1) the track and (2) driving style. For example, my left front gets the most wear at VIR (makes sense given the track configuration), but the rears get considerably more wear at Mid-Ohio. If you are using DSC, your rear tire wear will be less. Best to monitor the...
  9. Ready For The Track (With 18's)

    E63/E64 M6 Discussion
Street tires to slicks is a very big change. I would not advise it until the driver has significant track experience, getting the car to the limit, turning off DSC (but don't do that on your first track day), and learning where those limits are and how the car reacts there. It also would make...
  10. Brake Pads for Track and Street

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
Resurrecting a 6+ year-old thread must be a record. Pagid RS19 pads were my choice for the track. As with most things, dual purpose street/track applications don't work that well for either.
  11. How much lighter can m5 get?

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
If you are serious about lightening the car, check out Craig Lawrence's project from several years ago. I think he took out around 600 lbs --http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-touring-discussion/119890-pictures-member-craig-lawrence-track-indianapolis-red-bmw-m5.html
  12. track preparations e60

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
Yes, don't just flush the brake fluid but replace with a brake fluid designed for track use. ATE worked fine for me when I tracked my M5. (I now use Motul or Performance Friction in my race car.) If you wind up doing track events regularly, you will want to consider brake pads -- Pagid RS19...
  13. New shoes, new pics|Radenergie R10

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
The Radenergie is still the best looking wheel for this car. Nice!

The Kumho SPT is more than adequate for street use. No reason to spend more than twice for Michelins if you are not tracking the car.
  15. Ready For The Track (With 18's)

    E63/E64 M6 Discussion
You won't want to use track pads on the street -- way too much noise. Swapping pads before and after a track weekend if not a big deal once you get used to doing it. Also, when you change pads, don't allow the caliper to hang by the brake line -- can cause a line failure even if the line is...
  16. Ready For The Track (With 18's)

    E63/E64 M6 Discussion
Great to hear of an 18" wheel that seems to work. (I run the 17x9 version of these on my e36 M3 race car.) Do check them regularly for cracks, as we should any wheel, especially non-forged ones. Also, the Conti slicks are a very different animal from the Nittos. They should provide a lot...
  17. Where do you guys buy your motor oil?

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
It appears that some work on reading comprehension is in order. What I said -- I thought rather clearly -- is that it is not worthwhile to me to spend my time researching oil data to determine if an oil other than the recommended one is suitable. If that's how you choose to spend your time...
  18. Where do you guys buy your motor oil?

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
No, you don't get the point. On the one hand I have the manufacturer telling me which oil to use. Sure there may be a deal there but I am confident BMW is not telling me to use an oil that will be harmful. On the other I have anecdotal accounts from individuals who say a different oil makes...
  19. Where do you guys buy your motor oil?

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
And as a driver, I am not wasting my time researching oil standards to see if I can save $4 per year by using an oil other than the one recommended -- what one gallon of gas costs. Whether there are other oils that can be used is not the point. The point is that I can use the one I KNOW will...
  20. Where do you guys buy your motor oil?

    E60 M5 and E61 M5 Touring Discussion
The manufacturer of your $90,000+ car tells you to use a specific oil in its $30,000 engine. Now, are you going to follow that recommendation or save a few dollars on a different type? Get it from Bimmerworld -- Search Results -- BimmerWorld Online Store.
