I (and my local BMW dealer) recommend a GL5 spec. 75W140 weight oil made for limited slip differentials (specifically Castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140, now called Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W140). I'm sure there are other suitable makes around though. This is for the rear diff only, not the...
  2. EDC confusion...

    E34 M5 Discussion
Yes it should just be a matter of adding the switch to cars without it. Apparently the connector is already in place.
  3. How to know if rear EDC shock is shot?

    E34 M5 Discussion
Yes, when they leak significantly they will need to be replaced or rebuilt. A slight leak is not a problem, as any lost fluid will be replaced by fluid from the reservoir. The leaking hose should be replaced immediately though, as they usually fail catastrophically (well mine did anyway).
  4. What is the sensor in the top of the rad?

    E34 M5 Discussion
I believe it is a 2 stage switch for the electric cooling fan (the fan is also used for cooling the condenser whenever the aircon is running).
  5. Coolant leak ...can't find where....?

    E34 M5 Discussion
I think the schrader valve is only for the 3.6. No such valve on my 92 Touring anyway.
  6. Oil temp gauge Q

    E34 M5 Discussion
Yes there is a thermostat for the oil cooler circuit. It is in the base of the oil filter housing I believe. Not sure if it is replaceable though. I can't see it specified on realoem anyway.
  7. flickering CEL, coolant temp sensor?

    E34 M5 Discussion
The blue one is for the engine management system (and probably the CEL) in case you were still wondering.

I have had my timing cover gasket replaced without removing the head. It has held up for many years since then.
  9. working on the car this weekend - just a couple questions

    E34 M5 Discussion
"To fit the tensioner do I need to remove the thermostat housing and if so does part #2 (11531312287) gasket ring need to be replaced" I didn't remove the thermostat housing when doing mine, but I have changed the thermostat at a later time. I changed the gasket ring when doing so, but it...

+1 on plugging them. I had my old PS(1)s plugged without any issues at all several years ago. The tyre guy did mention that they were not supposed to plug Z rated tyres, but he had plugged his Hayabusa tyre before and did 280+ km/h regularly.

Thanks Dave, It would be great if Phil could chip in on a solution to the tin foil flex issue :M5thumbs:

Funny that, I have exactly the same problem also in Bergen would you believe it or not. Can you not just have a new flex pipe welded in? The problem as I see it is removing the manifold in the first place to gain access for the welding. From what I can tell it is quite a job.

"Another question... On my drive to work this morning it took the car almost the full 20mins to build up the oil pressure to 210. Is that normal. The car runs a little ruff until the pressure is built up and I know it's because the cams are run off the oil pressure. I am planning on doing valve...
  14. S38B36 cylinder head repair

    E34 M5 Discussion
Yes I see they call it that. I always thought the 3.6 had a sprung hub clutch and single mass flywheel and the 3.8 a dual mass flywheel with a solid clutch. Maybe an expert can comment?
  15. S38B36 cylinder head repair

    E34 M5 Discussion
A far as I know yes, but to be 100% sure just check the vin number on realoem.com or Welcome, BMW fans! Some S38B38s have been converted to single mass flywheels, but I have never heard of it being done the other way round.

Single mass. Dual mass for the 3.8

Your are correct Karl, but I believe the tax saving for registering the car as a "van" was about 80% of the total tax. The tax alone on a new M5 Touring today is €164 000, so the original tax saving back in the 90'ies would have been a lot more than €15 000. However, after 10 years in Norway you...
  18. Failed US emissions, need some help please!

    E34 M5 Discussion
You could test your AFR by using a wideband o2 sensor to make sure you are not running lean. If not, an Italian tune up might work. The Euro metal catalyst is very resilient to damage as long as you don't run leaded fuel in the car, so it may still work well enough. As long as your plugs all...
  19. Is an M5 twice the car

    E34 M5 Discussion
I think it might have been part of a phone package, and also if the car was equipped with a fuel powered engine heater.
  20. Touring versus Sedan

    E34 M5 Discussion
The added weight of the Touring gives it better weight distribution actually.
