+1 on taking them off. No problem doing it, either, without damaging the ball joints.
This tool works just fine for popping out the ball joint ends from the steering knuckle. I had to leave the nut on to give it enough purchase and protect the very end of the ball joint stud.
This Ball Joint Kit has cups that fit perfectly for the bushing removal, though the C-Clamp is not big enough. Handy to have around, though, for all sorts of different DIY jobs.
And I used One of these presses, combined with the cups from the kit above, to easily push them out and install the new ones.
