with the engine off- twist the key and dont hold it (as you would normally would when cranking the engine until it starts). let off the key immediately.
the engine will crank and start normally.
the bottom line is the starter will crank until the engine starts (i think- dont know- mine starts almost instantly)...
This is a feature in most of the newer model BMWs and Mercedes. Not sure if it is a great one though as what happens if the starter grinds? I am thinking it may have been implemented due to the push button starters on some of the current cars. No need to worry though, as this is a feature.

The purpose for one-touch start is to prevent over cranking. You cannot crank the engine again once it's running which would also address the issue of starter/flywheel grinds. If I'm not mistaken, BMW adopted this technology from Bosch (who created it) since the e38.
