Range Rover or Porche Cayenne
Which would you buy for your wife, a Range Rover or a Porche Cayenne. I just drove the new Range Rover and was blown away at how nice it is. Not sure about the Porche--I know one thing--it is FUGLY in pictures.

Range Rover all the way!!...classic styling, off road ability when you want it, BMW sourced V8 engine, Comfy and well equipped also British made and partly designed by BMW
as for the Porsche all I can say is that i don't like the styling of the front, otherwise the interior and Expected performance looks pretty good

I agree with Klint. Ranger Rover all the way.
The Cayenne looks like a 996 on a fat diet.

Cayenne in black to hide the nose...
We've never had any luck with Range Rovers. We once got some good peice of advice to have a mechanic and an electrician in the back seat. I wish we took his advice.....

If you wife prefers more luxury, the obvious choice is the RR imo. With the BMW drivetrain, I am sure reliability concerns should not be as big a factor as previous generation models. If you want to get an SUV that you as an M5 owner can enjoy as well, get the Cayenne - that is if you can get over the styling aspect of it, but I have read it does seem a bit better in person.

My wife, unfortunately, does not appreciate Porches. In fact, I am getting her a new SUV since she says it's her turn (I have been looking at TTs as a second car).
I have checked w/ 2 dealers on the RR on price. Both will not negotiate. full MSRP. anybody know of any dealers that will sell for less than MSRP?

Steve,
E-mail me @: thebishman@cox.net.
I received a great price and the best service ever when I bought my '03 RR.
I now have 3000 miles on my RR since 26 Sept. It has run flawlessly except for a minor glitch in the emission system that made the service engine soon light appear. This was easily taken care of, and never in any way compromised the 'running' of the vehicle.
I can not tell you how pleased I am with this purchase. I've always liked R.R.s, but have refused to buy one in the past secondary to service concerns. Touch wood, that hopefully will not become a problem on the new version. It is incredibly comfortable, and also handles as well as an SUV that weighs 5500lbs could. Knowing that this vehicle can handle just about any adverse conditions that I could possibly find myself in is very satisfying. My concerns on reliability are calmed by the fact that the vehicle was designed with much input from BMW and that Ford now owns Land Rover, and appears to be making strides towards far greater quality. Many of the major components; (engine; transmission; HVAC; Radio/NAV, etc.), are German in origin. Read BMW.
Everyone who'se ridden in it comments on how smooth the ride is, and the fact that it certainly has plenty of power finally. Lastly, the Exterior/Interior is a work of art imho.
I would hence say get the RR. Yes the Porsche Cayenne is much faster and handles extremely well; but God, how could you stand to look at it first thing every morning!.

Cayenne -- very good performance on- and off- road. But it's ugly and has not been crash tested independently.
Rover -- Not been crash tested and its off-road capability will never be used by the wife.
X5 3.0 manual or 4.4 or 4.6is -- the best SUV for those who never go off-road. It is #1 in terms of crash safety and will never roll over unless you go out of your way. Available with 16-way comfort seats. The best looking SUV in the world especially in 4.6is form.
I would buy neither the Cayenne nor the Rover. The X5 is just too good.

For whatever it's worth, the X5 placed in the middle of the pack of mid-sized SUVs tested in the most recent Road & Track(? or Car & Driver?). The VW Toureg came in 1st, the GX 4702nd, the Acura MDX 3rd, the X5 4th. etc.

I am in a similar bind. Number three is on the way and the wife wants an SUV that can fit all three kids plus supporting gear. She really likes the Acura MDX. I am not a big fan of SUV’s but I don’t think I can hold her off this time (the M5 was almost an X5). For me it comes down to four choices: MDX, X5 4.6i, Range Rover or Cayenne. Here is my thought process on the choice. We previously nixed the X5 because it wasn’t very roomy. I can’t find any data about the interior volumes for the Porsche but the exterior dimensions are bigger than the X5 (closer to an MDX). The MDX and Range Rover both have plenty of space for the family. As for on-road performance it looks like advantage Porsche with the X5 a close second and the others well behind. For, off-road ability, the Range Rover wins but the Porsche and Acura are capable. The X5 trails behind off-road. For us, true off-road ability isn’t that important. The truck needs to be good in snow and ice and the occasional dirt road. In the looks department I like the X5 best but I also like the Range Rover and unlike lots of members I do like the Cayenne. I like the MDX looks the least. At this point, I am leaning towards the Porsche. It appears to have enough room, superior on-road performance, and with the right tires should be good in the snow. Plus, it is the emotional pick for me since I have always wanted a Porsche. Availability might be a problem with the Porsche. I guess the choice really comes down to individual needs and preferences. Sorry to be so long winded.
