It isn't really an off road vehicle, at all.....sits almost as low as my M5.... wow it is fast for all the weight..HUGE tires, all the goodies....... 92,000.00 dollars, Way too much $$$$$$$$$$$ BUT it is what the next generation M5 is going to be powered with...

haha yeah that car sounds pretty reidiculous...I also agree that it is way too expensive.
What do you think of the engine? Also, how does it stack up to a cayenne turbo or s, if you have driven one?
Hey UFH and all, was getting my beast serviced and had the opportunity to also take the X5M out for a quick spin with the saleslady, so had to be somewhat of a good boy.
I did not like the absence of exhaust note (pretty quiet) but did like the higher driving position. Turbo's come on strong and linearly and if was not for heads up display would get into trouble quickly. 2d generation i-drive much more intuitive and display seems much higher quality look to it. Overall a really nice put together machine. Brakes were HUGE, surprised they were not cross drilled but really big.
I would have to drive it a few times to see if it really is "M" like, but definitely thumbs up so far. Took a few iphone pics so here ya go....Listed price was $91K

Wow. Thats about the ugliest BMW I have ever seen. Front end looks like one of those Russian criminal's tuned Cayenne
And you say the ' turbo's come on strong' ?
I was lead to believe there would be NO turbo lag at all.. Or wait , thats only possible in a parallel universe

The X5M is 109 fully equipped here in Canada and an M5 is (last time I checked) about 125ish.. so all in all I really think the X5M is well priced for the value of what your getting. Remember that a comparable Cayenne Turbo is way more $$$ and I am guess it the RR Super Charged is not that far off either.
For those of us that are looking for the ultimate M winter drive.. this is it. I really hope they don't use the same engine because I have ever intention of owning one X5M and M6 (new one) when it is out.

Ok, few comments on this: I've driven the X5 M and X6 M now, probably about 15 miles on each around town, back country roads and the highway. Obviously no off-roading, but again, 99.999% of people who buy an SUV will never drive on anything worse than a graded dirt road so let's leave the "it isn't a Range Rover" coments at bay for now.
I'm considering an '10 M5 and am now seriously looking at the X5 M (love the X6 M look but the back seats don't do it for me and I'm not willing to pay over 3 grand more for less). So that aside, let's review the high points:
-Great interior, new idrive is fantastic
-Suspension/Ride/Handling is amazing, better than some "sports" cars I've driven...
-Engine is a revelation, imagine this in the M5 with the 1300 lbs less weight......
-Has the same 0-60 as the M5
-Transmission is very smooth yet aggressive, paddles are very nice
-Breaks are huge and amazing
-It can tow my boat and then some
-Decent trunk space and tons more with the fold-down option
-Styling is bad *** without being showy stupid
I disagree about how low the thing sits, while it isn't a monster truck it is far from the M5. Far more than a typical range rover sport for instance. You will not kill your oil pan driving at reasonable speeds on a "rough" road with this.
So when you compar it to the M5 it is actually right on the money cost wise and you could argue that it is in many ways better due to the space, towing, AWD components. Now I do miss the 6MT, and the tranny might not be the SMG but it is close. Witht he M5 at $85k base and this being the same, why are we saying "$92k is too much"? Compare it to a Cayenne Turbo S with a base of $125k with worse performance stats and that ugly-*** body!!!!! Oh and it also gets 1 MPG better than the M5's V10 for what that's worth.
So all this being said, this thing kicks serious *** and is in my opinion "worth it" when you do the right comparasions. Vs. a normal X5, yes it is costs more and sure this is a **** ton of money for the average person to consider spending on a car.
I'm considering an '10 M5 and am now seriously looking at the X5 M (love the X6 M look but the back seats don't do it for me and I'm not willing to pay over 3 grand more for less).
Verdict: I'm sold
We are in very similar boats. I want something new but man do I ever miss the manual 6 spd. transmission. '10 M5 is nice.. but man its in the old shape.

I recently test drove one also and I echo many of the above comments. This was a quick around the block, 5 mile test drive.
I did not feel much, if any, turbo lag. Transmission is smooth and fast though there is too much delay when using the paddles. The paddles themselves are metal but they feel cheap to me. If I owned one of these I'd leave it in drive. The ride was very comfortable and planted when I cornered with it. The wheels look like they could go even bigger. I would imagine those in really snowy climates will need a proper snow tire.
The interior is a nice place to be but like with the M3, its not quite as special as it should be. Overall, I think its a much better real world car than the E60 M5. Its so much more useable, doesn't have a transmission that either jerks you around (SMG) or wasn't quite designed for the motor (stick), has the AWD for those who feel they need it, has gobs of power, the look is OK, but if you want it all in one package, this is it. The one place the E60 M5 has it over this is the steering. The steering on the X5M is very well weighted but is pretty numb and I am not a fan of the nerf type steering wheel padding M is using these days- its just a little too much.
I think the E63 AMG is quite a machine and when the F10 M5 comes out I think it will actually surpass it. The motor is epic.
Im seriously considering this as a replacement for my B7 when the time comes. Right now Im leaning towards the next gen B7 should it be available in the US but this might be an interesting change of pace.
