My family is 75% sure on an X5 diesel right now. We will order with the Premium Package, Cold Weather, Rear Climate, Technology Package, Adaptive Drive (standalone option for '10 SAVs) and Comfort seats (not the Nappa leather). We haven't test driven one, but have driven the 3.0si variant a year ago. With the $4500 discount, we are looking forward to getting the car but only if we pay $800 over invoice. We're in no rush for a third car, so if we miss this deal, we have 2 more years for searching.

So, my odyssey continues ....
I just ordered my second X5 Diesel in 3 months.... the short story: Ordered the 2009 on July 5...production number, trcked on the BMW website, on the train, on the boat, whatever...finally it arrives, we get the call.
The day before we were to pick it up BMW announced the 4500 ECO on 2010s... Crap. Year newer, with the new idrive... or take the 09?
Quickly found an order slot for the 2010, declined the 2009. Now waiting again. Paid a bit more for the slot, but not excessive.
You are right about the Adaptive- it went from a $3700 Sport Package, all inclusive, to a $2200 Sport Activity Package, plus a $3500 Adpative Drive Option! So from $3700 to $5700. (Pissed me off that the wife insisted on the black trim! $2200!)
Pretty much the same options as you list, plus the sport activity, Sound package, Ipod and smartphone
It's a great machine...we wanted a 2009, lots cheaper and I always like to buy the second year of new inovations....let em get the bugs out.... Good luck all. oh, by the way i got 27 mpg around town without a/c on....not too shabby

Well, there really was no MSRP difference in the base price of the '09 and '10. I believe most of the packages have the same MSRP price, besides the changes of the now-gone sport package. It is a bit annoying that you could get seats, steering wheel, rims/tires, headliner and the anodized aluminum trim for just $200 more on the '09, but what can you do?
The more I look into the car, the more options I want, such as the third row option. With it, you get self leveling rear suspension along with an adjustable second row (reclines and moves forward/backwards for more room). It is similar to our E53's reclining rear seats but for $1700, it is too expensive as we are only a family of 3, and any of my high school friends will never fit comfortably in the back after practice. The Nappa dashboard is another option I'd like as it adds a bit of class, but at $1900, it is also out of the question.
We're pretty late on ordering the X5. It ends on Monday, we can't talk to our sales person as a family until Saturday, and allocations are pretty much taken. If by some miracle Morristown BMW is able to get us an allocation, we're probably going to buy this X5 and not buy another BMW for a good while. That means no E39 M5 when I turn 17, but I have to make sacrifices, or not in this occasion (425 lbs. ft. of torque!).

Where did you learn about the $4500 ECO being available on 2010's. My dealer confirmed yesterday that the credit goes away on Monday and that it is only available on 2009, at least for now. I'd love to have verification of what you were told to stick in my dealers face...
I was told from our sales person (from Morristown BMW in NJ) that the '10 does qualify for the eco credit as long as it is ordered before August 31st and it takes delivery after 60 days. I've also read online that this '10 addition was a recent change, but '10 X5's do qualify.

I had dealers say that as well. The problem is that some dealers are actually keeping their sales reps in the dark! Why let the reps know there is a 4500 discount, they'll just sell a few cars that the dealer then WON'T have in November to sell!
The dealer needs to contact BMWNA or their regional rep. It is a fact. It is not published but it is all over the forums- bimmerfest, etc.
The credit certainly goes away Monday, but it would apply to a 2010 ordered in your name before then!

Just spoke to your dealer and they said "they will do whatever they can to get the credit, but there is no guarantee" He tried to sell me the car based on the above statement, but when I said I need it to be part of the deal, he said no one can commit because BMW has not confirmed any extention of the plan. Frustrating. I'd love to take advantage, but my dealer is giving me the same story. I was hoping to use your dealer as leverage, but no such luck. The reason it's an issue for me is my lease expires in January, and in order for it to make sense to order the car now, I would need the $4500 to offset the extra payments.
