Big Bend Open Road Race, April 23-26, 2008

Big Bend Open Road Race, April 23-26, 2008, http://www.bborr.com/ , 118 miles of sanctioned open road racing in West Texas. “The BBORR is more of a technical driver's challenge than a straight road course ... There are 59 turns in the last 50 miles leading to Sanderson (TX.) They are composed of many elevation changes and are made up of all the types of turns to be found on any road course, anywhere. ... the Unlimited record for the BBORR is over 172 MPH!”

Any board members interesting in participating? A recent Roundel article told the story of two guys who participated in a 3-series (non-M) convertible. A great opportunity for driving your M in a sanctioned event at the speeds it was designed.

A lawful open road race on state highways in West Texas. Local law enforcement closes the roads to the public during the event. No speeding tickets.

No oncoming traffic or pedestrians, driver's have the entire road. Depending on speed class, vehicles leave the starting line at either 30 or 90 second intervals.

West of Ft. Worth, interstate speed limits are generally 80 mph.

This is an opportunity to test your skills and your M in the type of conditions it was designed.

The official website, http://www.bborr.com/ , has all the details.

Man, this looks great! I'm interested - it'll be a longshot, but I'm interested.

You might talk to other Houston area M owners and see if you can get a group together. BMWM5Driver above is from Sugar Land.

Both Roundel and C&D have written articles about this race. Based in a small town environment, the casual events around the competition are warm and congenial. Big Bend National Park is a great backdrop. Take a navigator or co-driver to share in the duties.

The top 2 speed and unlimited classes have a lot of Vettes, Vipers and the like. Time to give them German M competition. One local guy has been running a modified El Camino for several years.

There is an awards ceremony for each speed bracket, pick a speed class you'd be comfortable in and you might win a trophy. The Roundel article followed two guys who ran the course in a 3-series (non M) convertible, with the top down. They placed in the 110 or 120 mph bracket.

My uncle was telling me about this over the holidays. Sounds like it would be lots of fun to do.
