1st M5 buyer concerns...help!

Hello Everyone:

I am new to the forum and have been reading up on all the issues sorrounding the ownership of an E39 M5.

I am considering purchasing the following vehicle:

2003 E39 M5 - 39k miles, well maintained and at a fair price ($36.5k).

The car looks to be in immaculate condition and it is currently under CPO warranty until March of 2009.

My issue is this:

I had the car put on the lift at a local BMW Dealership and the mechanic found that the dash board light would stay on after the car was turned off. They thought at first it was the ignition, then they thought it was the computer's fuel sensor. It finally turned out that the alternator needed to be replaced. Since the car was under warranty it was replaced at no cost to me and the seller took car of the deductible. My only concern is this alternator a sign of any other potential problems with the vehicle. Since the car is under full BMW warranty for the next year should I not worry about this one issue? I am definitely thinking of getting an extended warranty at the end of the existing warranty period. Is this just over kill?

Finally, with 39k miles at a price of $36.5K do you feel this car is being purchased at the right price?

Thanks guys!

Best,

Henry

Good to go......

Great car - good price. Alternator this early is a bit odd, but warranty will cover anything else major. Battery is NOT covered. If it's the original battery, 'would proactively replace it now. Their average life is about 4 years; and when they quit, it's sudden with no warning. Besides, a bad alternator could have shortened the battery's useful life.

Welcome and good luck. 'Hope you have the same trouble free experience I've had with mine for the last 6 years. Proactive maintenance is key; and DON'T follow BMW's "recommended" service intervals. They're BS. Search this Board for maintenance recommendations from long time owners.

Enjoy!! E39 M5 is the best performance sedan ever produced. Period.
