Nürburgring rules

In their information folder, Nürburgring GmbH writes

"- All cameras forbidden"

1. Why is this rule in place?

2. How stiff/much is it enforced? As you know, there are a lot of videos from people driving the trach.

3. Do they mean stills, moving or both?

Nürburgring

Ok. I've seen that the Nordschleife has some rather limited opening hours, why is that? How much waiting is to expect? Should one be there 17:45 on the 23rd?, to be sure to get one lap?

Nürburgring
3. Both.
2. My understanding is that the first time you get caught, it's a 1-day ban. After that, I don't know. Like BURTON said, most take care of mounting, etc. after the toll.
1. It's in place, from my experience, because most people are not camera/mounting system experts and may not realize what loads a camera/mounting system is subject to, whether inside or out of a car, at 1xx MPH and 1+ g on a road that has bumps. The LAST thing you want to have happen is a camera mount coming loose inside the car and tangling your hands/arms/head/feet/brake pedal etc. up in cords when you're concentrating very hard. Or worse, a camera falling off the outside of the car and causing a wreck behind you...

All that being said, you can get some really neat video and hopefully you have a passenger that can worry about the camera so you can worry about driving, and only driving.

Re: Nürburgring rules

"- All cameras forbidden"

1. Why is this rule in place?

There are multiple reasons. Here are some:
1- Video cams can be interpreted as speed or lap timing devices which invalidate many insurances.
2- Some immature drivers do silly things on the track just to post their videos on the net afterwards thus, unnecessarily increasing the risk to others and themselves.
3- They may give ammunition to the groups who want the NS to be closed to Tourist Driving or closed alltogether.
4- Even for the goodwilled driver, it might be argued that filming may push them a bit harder than otherwise.

2. How stiff/much is it enforced? As you know, there are a lot of videos from people driving the trach.

They check you when you get on the track. They also have other unmarked check points around the track and some other drivers can report you. Once, they know you're filming, they can ban you from NS as they please. Not sure any written rules there. That, said many still film as you can see.

3. Do they mean stills, moving or both?

It's originally intended for video cameras, but today how do you know which is which?

Those who love the NS and would like it to stay open as long as it can (general beliefis it will be closed someday), co-operate with the authorities and obey these rules. Whatever it takes to keep it open!

If you really want to film, special permit can be arranged at a cost. Talk to the NS office at the parking lot.

At Ben Lovejoy's excellent site you can some more answers to these questions. http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/

Because the track is used at other times:
1- Industry days for testing new cars
2- Racing and race practices or testing
3- Club days

Normally, they should open at advertised times, but there are no guarantees. An accident, fog or some other unforeseen event may delay it and if it approaches closing time, they may not open it at all. It's all part of the NS experience.

I would like to thank everybody here for good and nice replies! My lap will probably be in a very low tempo, not racing. Mainly because of conserns for insurance and personal safety, I belive one would need much basic training before taking on the 'ring "for real".

I do my fast laps on the 'ring on my XBOX, Project Gotham Racing II. Sad that it lacks the new or old M5.

Stay cool on track and elsewhere! :-)

Yes, but they are not THAT different! I watched a video taken there on my laptop placed next to my TV, on which I ran PGRII with a M3, I tried to keep up and I watched the similarities. The track was much simmilar, but in the enviroment I missed some trees on the xbox, but they are probably removed because of size or speed limitations on the xbox. I noticed that the place where the cars are let out are included, as are some houses I never had seen before.

PGRII is really well done!, watch for example the Sheraton Hotell in Stockholm, all shops, subway entrance etc is included!
