E39 M5 Autocross

So I now realize why the E39 M5 is not in a higher autocross class. Had a lot of fun, but what a pain in the ***** trying to put that power down on an autocross course.

With a bit of instruction and practice, you'll be up to speed on handling it a lot better. I assume you had DSC off.

I usually make all the THSCC autocrosses, but since instructing back at the intermediate school in August, I've just been too busy. I'm really sorry I missed this last one too given the great feedback from everyone who went. Looks like I'll miss the non-points finale in a couple of weeks too at this point.

With a few mods, the M5 is a blast to autocross, especially on our airport locations we use. My car falls into ESP, so on a PAX basis isn't nearly as competitive as my 330i ZHP that my daughter and I normally autocross in D-stock (that car is now at school with my daughter however), but it is still a lot of fun on the faster courses. I've been autocrossing modified BMW sedans since the 1970's, and the M5, setup like I have mine, just brings great pleasure every time I take it out to an event these days. Finesse and smoothness (definitely sport mode off) are GREATLY rewarded in the M5.

Definitely join the THSCC if you haven't already. It's a great club with some fantastic drivers (many top national level guys and gals).

I've got a few videos up of the M5 in action at CCA events at the PC and some local courses too although most on my account are with the ZHP.
