Track time opportunity with Northwoods Shelby club at Autobahn Country Club (Midwest area)

Hi all,

If any one in the Midwest might be interested, just thought I would post a thread about an opportunity for anyone looking for a few laps on Autobahn Country Club. Autobahn Country Club is just south of Chicago in Joliet, IL. The Northwoods Shelby club has a weekend set for September 27 and 28. Here is the email invitation below.

This is the same group that I went with on my trip to Road America.

**********************

Fellow members,

There are about 2 weeks left for our last track event of the year; the Northwood's Gran Prix at Autobahn Country Club on September 27 and 28, 2008. We are current about 2/3 full and while we are offering on-site registration, there is a $50.00 charge for registering at the track. Why wait and pay the extra charge, sign up now and save the money. The facility is top-notch with a great atmosphere and the track operators are a pleasure to work with. This event is open to all makes and model of vehicles including convertibles with approved roll bars with the only exception is no open-wheeled vehicles. Get your friends and neighbors involved that may have a non-Ford. While our heritage is of a Ford background, it is also enjoyable being on track with different types of vehicles. After all we are all 'car people' that like to test the limits of our vehicles no matter what that happens to be.

We are running the 1.5 mile North Track that is a flowing circuit that features some sweeper-type corners with a longer straight-away on Saturday. Once you think you have that track all figured out, we change over to the South Track for Sunday. The South Track is 2.1 mile circuit that is a little more technical but has a couple straight-aways and more speed is experienced. It is like going to two totally different tracks all on the same weekend and venue. Both tracks offer a beautiful, park-like venue with lots of run-off. Our schedule as it stands now is offering 4 run groups with 6 sessions of 15 minutes per day. We try to group the attendees according to vehicle, driver experience, and times anticipated or achieved previously. What more could you ask for! Well, we are also having a cookout on Saturday night at the track for a small charge of $10.00 a person, so bring your friends and family. The cookout allows a lot of 'bench racing' stories on how much faster we all are once we are not on the track surface with our fellow members.

The price per day is $180.00 with the option of just a single day or the entire weekend. You can bring your friends and family along for rides at speed in your car as long as the car passes certain safety standards and liability forms are signed ahead of time; appropriate wristbands will be given out accordingly to allow that to happen. Please visit our website for all the rules and regulations pertaining to participating in our track events. The facility also has a $5.00 a person charge at the gate for any non-driver of the event.

Camping is allowed at the track for $30.00 for the weekend; see our website for more information and you must call the track ahead of time to reserve a spot. Hotel info is also on the website. There is a trailer drop off with tech/registration offered for Thursday night at the track. The track schedule and the weekend schedule of events along with all forms pertaining to this event are on the website. All contact info for questions is also listed too.

We want to see you all at the track to close another successful Northwood's track event season!

And the follow up...

Hi all,

Just following up on the touring session at Autobahn. As much as I thought I was done for the year for track sessions, this opportunity just kind of snuck up out of nowhere .

Had a really good time. I had never been on the South track before so I figure I would treat this like a checklist of tracks to get to.

I have a few pictures from the event here.

I went with my coworker Kurt in his Cobra, but a few M5ers were able to join as well.

I actually ran into another coworker (Jim). He had a really nice project car (Honda Civic with the Acura Integra GSR motor and Corvette Z06 front brake set). Unfortunately he had some car trouble on Saturday.

Track packing list
In my previous post on my trip to Road America, I included a travel packing list of items to bring. I added a couple more items to the list.

Portable chair

I also brought a few more batteries and my laptop to download the videos from the camera to free up space on the card in between sessions. I'll have to look into an actual video camera one of these days.

Met Alpesh with his E60 M5 at the M5 meet the day before at Freddies Roadhouse.

Met another M5er (Greg) with his E39 M5.

There were some pretty cool project cars there.

This is an early 1970's Datsun. This little joker was fast. You'll see it in my video. I waved him by, but he was so quick in the turns I just couldn't keep up.

And how about this little puppy... He was doing some serious damage on the straights in the parking lot.

This 760 was not on the track, but I thought it looked pretty sharp.

Well, what is a track session without video.

This was the remaining ten minutes of the fourth session. The group had just been in the pit for a black flag. I heard that a part of someone's brake pad flew off their car. Fortunately, there were no car casualties, unlike Road America. However, you could say there were some close calls.
+ Google Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then Google Video is down or you don't have Flash installed.

I think I got a pretty good video as well. Had one O.S. moment at the 3:43 mark. This video just begs for some Batman bubble comments. I have to brush up on my video editting skills.

What did I do differently from Road America?
1.) Tire dressing to monitor tire rollover

One of the things I did a little different was I sprayed some tire dressing on the side walls. I wanted to get a feel for how much rollover was occurring during the session.

Driver's side

Passenger's side.

This helped me see the rollover a little bit better. The driver's side will probably always take the worst beating. I do have the stock setup and will have this for a while.

2.) Peake code reader monitor
Driving my car around normally, I know the only code that I have is an E-Box fan code. I figured that I would add this check to my post session checklist. After each run, I hook up the peake to see if any new codes show up. Happy to say I still just have the E-Box code. Eventually, I'll address that issue. So far so good though.

Earlier in the year I had a couple of misfire codes. I think this occurred at Gingerman, but I wasn't sure so I thought this would be good to add.

Another good day

Had to collect a few things for a barbeque later on that evening.

So the ol' beast turned from race car to grocery getter. There aren't phone booths big enough for this thing.

Until next time, the is Wi_KeD_M5 signing off.
