Thanks for all the info you have supplied regarding mp3 compatability. I have a M5 on order due to be here in January. I'm looking forward to your review of what works with burning mp3's to CD.
I had a question regarding mp3 compatability with DVD's. Do you know if the system can recoginze mp3 files on DVD? Have you had a chance to experiment with dual layer media? I'm hopeful that the DVD drive will be able to read mp3 data on DVD.
It appears that you don't have to have the NZV disc during the entire NAV operation. Therefore, you can listen to your cd/dvd during long trip WHILE using NAVIGATION Feature.
From E60 M5 Manual page 104 (Navigation Section) "... ... ... Use the same drive for navigation DVDs and audio CDs. All the data required for each guidance procedure is held in the navigation system's buffer memory. The navigation DVD then can be removed during route guidance. This enables you to listen to audio CDs during route guidance. A message appears on the control display if new data from navigation DVD is required. If you change the navigation DVD, a destination that has not been saved will be deleted. ... ... ..."
I hope this help some of us! :byee55amg

Now that's a limitation if I ever heard about one.
So for the long trip to unfamiliar places you have to pick between listening to music or getting directions. What was BMW thinking??????????????????/
Well, you can play regular audio CDs in the DVD player. So if you don't need the NAV, you get an additional CD disk audio source (regular CD, DVD and 6 CD changer in my 645Ci - 8 disks total).
Naturally a DVD movie would not play thru the screen or speakers (rats).
I normally use Explorer (with integrated Sonic software from HP) to burn data CDs, but are you referring to Windows Media Player in "using the software built into Windows XP?" If so, it does have the option to create a data CD, but I don't see anything for creating the directory structure you mention. What function does the directory/folder structure provide? Are the names used as part of the name that shows up in iDrive?
I also have little ripped in mp3 format due to its lower quality to size. Does the CCC only decode mp3 and not others like wma? Do you have recommendations on converting wma to mp3 with as little loss as possible?
A couple of questions from an IT neanderthal:
Does it matter if the DVD is -R or +R? and how do I create a directory before I burn? Thanks in advance.
Steve
I failed again last night - I had to go to bed at 8:30, I was so tired. I've got some spare time tonight - I seem to be running up-hill in treacle at the moment!
I'm pretty sure WMA isn't supported - I use LAME (dos based, but EAC is one of many windows front ends). I use the following parameters: -V 4 --vbr-new %s %d That gives a variable bit rate with an average rate of around 150 kb/s (10x compression).
I meant just using plain vanilla Windows explorer, I don't have any plug-ins.
I could put together a sample ISO with a few tracks on it for you to download and try, just to make sure that the M5 is the same as the M6, but I'd rather concentrate on documenting everything I've done so far.
Making progress - I've almost finished the EAC instructions, next I'll work on the MP3BR Imager instructions, and then it'll be done - I've spent 2.5 hours on it so far this morning, less than an hour to go. I'll test it, and take some pics of it working in the car, it should be posted by 4 o'clock this afternoon (4 hours from now).
Hi all Australian E60 M5 owners:
Has anyone in Oz been able to make the CD drive work with MP3 discs.
I have tried all of the tricks in this forum and all I get is the greyed out CD icon !!
I have tried different media as suggested etc etc but nothing seems to make it bloody recognise a CD recorded in MP3 format!!

No, same results with greyed out CD. I suspect it is a software glitch which may be fixed with an update. It will be interesting to see if anyone else here in Oz can play mp3's and which software version they have. All else is going so good, I would be reluctant to change my software version. Happy enough with 6 cd's to choose from and if I want more choice, I can always connect an I pod.
Thanks... I suspected as much. I rang up Brisbane BMW and told them of this issue and they said that they were going to see if there was a software update to fix the problem. I have also asked them to install the Aux. input in the glove box so that I can run my MP3 player through it. I would assume however that this would also require a software update as it would need to recognise this input as well!!
I am sorry that I haven't got any photos on the board yet but my car is sapphire black with the perforated black leather. Believe me the air conditioned seats are a blessing in Brisbane in summer !!!
Finally got around to buying some double layer DVDs, and I'm hapy to report that they work in the DVD drive. I burned 2 DVDs (using the settings in Nero attached below), each with just over 8GB of MP3s, and they work great.
Your car should be able to play MP3s in the dash CD & DVD (nav) drives. If not, you need to have the progman updated to 20.00 or higher, and have MP3 playback retrofitted--see SIB attached.
Thanks. I'm aware of the above. I thought I had heard that a software update would come to fix our changers so that they would get the MP3 ability. (the changers... not the dash.. I already have it there and know it)
Is that not true? I'm guessing we'll never get that software update, but instead will be forced to buy a new changer if we want this ability.
It would be nice for existing car changers to have MP3 capability and the lack of stock IPod support is disheartening. In the meantime though, I have to say that creating a 160 or so shuffle out of ITunes and playing it in dash is pretty nifty. Having the titles show up is certainly an advantage over the AUX interface. Nero or Easy CD Creator would probably give a cleaner display of the info but straight Itunes sure is simple.
I don't know what program that is you have in the thumbnails
I'm using Roxio Music Disc Creator.
I have an option to create a MP3 disc or DVD music disc.
I've tried making a DVD music disc, and it runs in my computer but won't play in the DVD player in the car. It's the type that has a front end with a menu system, etc..
Wonder if I'm using the wrong type of DVD (it's a RW) or if I'm using the wrong type of Audio format (my options of AC-3- which I've tried) Mpeg 1 layer or uncompressed audio.
THANKS!
