996 Turbo today would fit the bill price wise.

I sold my 2000 M5 in 2004 for a 2003 996 C4S and was generally happy with the result, but always missed the M5........then on to a Mercedes SL 65...

Dunlop Wintersport M3's are awesome combination sport/snow. Worked great on M5 last winter.

Blizzaks WS-50 are great snow dedicated tires and a rubber is softer. Used on 525 for several years.

I have 57,000K, no issues so far......the 60,000 Inspection where they change the plugs, filters, etc....will not be cheap, but that is regular maintenance......I actually believe the M will hold up...
