For Sale: 2000 Carbon Black M5 in CT

I am considering selling my 2000 BMW M5. 80k miles, 6 speed manual transmission, Carbon Black exterior with black leather sport interior (titanium trim). Standard sunroof and navigation system. Options include fold down rear seats, power rear sunshade.

I purchased this car last year from a private owner, who in turn had purchased it from a private owner and CPO’d it. All the service records have stayed with the car and I have extensive documentation. Both of the previous owners were, shall we say, anal about the car, as am I. The car has been enthusiast owned and maintained. I have been a BMWCCA member for years. No accidents and clean Carfax.

Oil changed religiously with BMW recommended TWS 10W-60 only. Does not leak a drop of oil and consumes a minimal amount (typical for the S62 motor). Fresh Royal Purple Syncromesh in the tranny. New OEM air filters. I will include extra oil and oil filters in the sale.

Interior is essentially flawless. Leather is perfect. Black leather with titanium trim sport package. I recently replaced the trim piece around the nav screen due to some slight discoloring. Shift knob and e-brake are new, having been replaced by previous owner due to aging. Dension Icelink i-pod player has been hardwired into the trunk, and controls the ipod from the dash controls. (Due to some unknown quirk I have not been able to get the icelink text display to work, and I have not had time to resolve it yet). Leather and dash are treated monthly with Meguiar’s.

Exterior is in excellent condition. Paint is deep and glossy, you really need to see the color changing aspects of Carbon Black in person to truly appreciate it. Car has always been garaged, no winters, not a single scratch or dent. I wash the car weekly and wax it monthly using only Klasse synthetic polish and P2S2 carnauba wax. There are a few (very few) rock chips in the front, any noticeable ones have been touched up with the Paintscratch system. Wheels are straight with zero curb rash. Tires are Bridgestone Pole Position S-03s, brand new in the rear and less than 9k on the fronts.

I recently had a professional tint job done, 20% all around, lifetime warranty. I also added euro clear corner Hella angel eye headlights from Eurosport Design, at a cost of over $1,000.

As far as mechanicals, the car runs perfectly and pulls like a freight train. I recently replaced both MAFs due to a perceived rough idle (problem solved). Other recent performance enhancements include a B&B exhaust system ($2,000), Dinan adjustable rear sway bar with bracket reinforcements, and Stoptech front big-brake kit (fits under stock wheels). I also added the BMW Euro brake ducts, Carbotech XP8 ceramic pads all around, and stainless steel brake lines front and rear. Brake setup cost over $3,000, and has been on the car less than 2k miles.

You may be aware of a couple commonly known E39 M5 issues: carbon buildup and VANOS problems. The previous owner had the heads removed and carbon buildup addressed at 69k/September 2004 (ultrasonically cleaned, plus new exhaust guides and exhaust valves, heads milled). In addition, the VANOS unit was replaced with the updated version due to noise at 72k miles/August 2005. Both actions performed under warranty. Other typical issues for the E39 M5 have also been addressed: new clutch at 55k, dash pixels, final resistor (HVAC) and power steering lines replaced at 73k. All documented with receipts.

This car is fast, agile, luxurious, and beautiful. It is in excellent condition, mechanically and cosmetically, and needs nothing. I am selling to free up some capital for new ventures, but I would consider a trade for E36 M3 + cash. Car is located in Connecticut and can be shown to any prospective buyer. Pics to follow. Asking price is $33,500.00.

I'll move a little, but not that much. I'd rather keep it at that price. We all know KBB is just a rough guide. This car's detailed service history adds quite a bit of value IMHO. Any potential buyer can rest assured there will be no big ticket repairs in the near future.

What KBB search did you do? The KBB number on that car would be $32,680.

Yup. Private Party Value in excellent condition. He's not a dealer, so there's no way you're going to give him full retail which would probably put it up around $35k or $36k, right?

A few pictures. If the weather ever clears up around here I can get some current ones with the tint and the new headlights.

Here's the KBB.com description of good:
"This vehicle has a clean title history, the paint, body and interior have only minor (if any) blemishes, and there are no major mechanical problems."

Excellent is a car that is like new, further, "Less than 5% of all used vehicles fall into this category." Paint chips on the hood from highway driving will knock you out of this. Even if he had it repainted to get rid of chips, repainting takes out out of this category

KBB for excellent is 29.5,
KBB for good is $27,700

Well, you guys can debate KBB all day long

The car is in excellent shape, regardless of your interpretation of KBB definition. Obioban, if you're interested, we can talk price, but I could care less what KBB says at this point. The value is set by the market, and KBB tries to react to that, not vice versa. Given current availability and the pedigree of this particular vehicle,
I think the car is worth the asking price, regardless of what KBB shows, and while I am negotiable, I'm not desperate to sell.
