Wanted e39 M5 - trade for '01 M-Coupe!

Hi Folks,

I picked up a "new to me" M-Coupe today from a friend, and my wife is already giving me grief about getting a 2-seater. I told her that the car is awesome and she needs to give it a try. Even with that being said, the fact that we have a 10 month old little guy at home means that my life with the coupe will be short lived.

I am hoping I can make two families happy by finding a nice trade for a car like this. Anyone who appreciates the M5 will definitely appreciate this car. I am looking for an e39 M car with a similar history and state of condition as this car (stats are below). Feel free to shoot me a PM, email, or call 800-624-4261 x4222.

Thanks for looking (pics will follow soon),

-Burt
  • 2001 model, Silver on Black leather
  • S54 motor - 315HP pulls like a tank
  • 3000lb curb weight and chassis rigidity of an M5
  • 55,500 miles (for now!)
  • Completely stock - all original, never been modded in any way (except for cupholders added)
  • Never been in any kind of accident (all VINs match, no paintwork either)
  • Garaged/covered west coast car, 2 owners before me
  • Never smoked in, raced, or abused (doesn't even have the cigarette lighter that BMW was supposed to supply)
  • All service records available (including original sticker and invoice) and a PPI was done this week
  • Strictly minor cosmetic blemishes - curb rash, small passenger door ding, scuffs on air dam
  • Mechanically sound - no out of the ordinary repairs in the car's history
  • Highly collectible, only 690 built for '01 and '02

Are you talking about a straight trade? The Coupe you describe would seem to be worth about $32k -- that'll only get you a higher mileage 2000 M5 these days. The '01s and up are trading for closer to $35k+.

I just paid a hair under $44k with tax for my '02 M5 with 49,000 miles.

FYI.

Hi Ben,

Good point. I am okay with a high mileage car so long as it is well maintained and in excellent shape. I am also willing to put in a little cash, but I can't put in any more than $2-4k.

You've got a nice stable there. Care to compare & contrast the M-coupe and M5 (with the obvious caveat that your coupe is slower than the M5, while an S54 coupe is faster).

Burt,

I agree, higher mileage cars if well maintained and properly inspected before purchase should be just fine. With that kind of cash input on top of your Coupe ($32k is a conservative number for that Coupe, you might get $33-34k) you should be able to find a decent '01 or '02 M5.

I can't really offer much comparison on M5 vs. M Coupe yet, since I literally just bought the M5 a week and a half ago and have put a total of 40 or so miles on her. I drove her home from the dealer on a Monday night, flew out the next morning at 5AM for a two week business trip, which I'm still on...

I should know more in a month ....

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the tip. Do you have a web link, phone number or address for that car? Sounds like a good deal.

Thanks,

-Burt

Nicely done! Is it an '01 or did you go for an '02? I know it's an S54 because it's got the shadow chome rearview mirror trim...

Hi Ben,

It's an '01. I didn't realize that the 240HP cars don't have chrome around the rear view mirror. I did know that the "M" badges are rounded on '01 and newer models, versus flat metal on all the older ones.

I drove her down to Pasadena today and had a blast! That car is so much fun, it makes every other car I've ever driven feel unresponsive and slow. If I don't find a new home for this sucker, I am probably going to get arrested!
