Tracking a 2003 for sale...

As some know, I've been (very) actively searching for a 2003 M5...so I tend to get to know all the current sales.

Here is a VIN that's popped up 3 separate time- first time on ebay by the original owner. Then again on ebay with a car dealer. and finallly on cars.com and a few newspapers by a car broker.

Here is the reason for posting. The original post describes a 'defect'- the car was repainted on the right rear. THis is NOT in car fax. Here is the original description:

"The car has a clean title, clean car fax is in perfect condition. It did have minor repaint on the rear right side and we were told this by the owner of Tomlinson. We did not hesitate as this was the car we wanted and it had full warranty and was assured that it was not noticeable to the eye, only by a paint detecting machine. We had cashiers check made out, drove 6 hours to Gainesville and purchased the vehicle. Upon inspection we moved the car into all angles of sunlight and were please to notice that the damage must have been very minimal as it can not be distinguished by anyone unless you are a car repair man. "

VIN: WBSDE93423CF93476

Both the second and third sales attempts were silent on this repaint..

I just got off the phone with the broker who was more than a little surprised when I told him this.

Ard

PS Two points to this post- one, in case anyone is looking at this they should know and two, carfax was worthless!

FYI...CPO allows body work to be performed. If there was frame damage, then forget it. Just so you know even CPO cars are not immune to repaint.

Re: Tracking a 2003 for sale...

Here's yet another LMB 2003 (5700 miles) with some paint... an email from a salesman at an east coast dealership:

"This was actually a local trade-in at our Audi store…..they bought an A8 from us and traded the M5. It looks as if it was just a poor paint job……not really any structural damage. We just don’t want the hassle even though it would qualify for certification because it is an M5. I will get back to you on price……it’ll be $1000 over trade-in value and that will include a full detail."

They offered it to me for 58,750 - I passed...wrong color.

Fourth times a charm?

Now he's keeping bidder's IDs hidden...

Be careful out there...

Re: Tracking a 2003 for sale...

just for clarification: carfax doesn't report minor damage, only significant frame damage. i learned this recently while purchasing a used car. nothing beats an in depth inspection by a mechanic you trust.
