Does anyone have a wasted instrument cluster that is just taking up space that they would like to get rid of? It does not need to function but needs to be physically intact as I want to perform a post mortem on it and disassemble it. Basically I am seeing what it takes to take one of these apart and do not want to risk rendering my installed or spare cluster useless. Thank you.

Soon: Illuminated ZHP shift knob mod, "Gulf" oil cooler, S.S. Nav/Radio knobs by member Diny, Black-faced cluster retrofit, powder-coat valve/timing chain covers, painted plenum cover, custom M stiching on shift and e-brake boots, custom M striping on seats (like the E36 M3 probably), Powder-coat OEM Style 65 wheels, rear anti-roll bar and BeastPower brackets

My plan is to proof a way to disassemble the cluster without damage or losing parts and then transfer the black gauge faces from one of my clusters to the one that is currently (coded and programmed by the way) installed in my M5. I don't even know if this type of disassembly is possible and won't really know until I try. I would just transplant the black cluster in to the car but I am getting nervous with some of the answers I am getting as far as retrofitting a USED cluster into a vehicle. I figure if I can simply swap faces then I don't have to deal with it.

Removing the needles will be your biggest challenge.
I figured it would be. That has always been my biggest fear during ANY cluster modification.

I tried to pull them out of the 540 cluster with no success. If you want a cluster to practice on, then I don't see why this wouldn't do. All you gotta do afterwards is hunt down a MY2000 cluster with black dials.
Or......better yet.....if you're able to remove the "face" of the dials, you can have one made!

What's the state of the acrylic window? Does it have any scratches or scuffs?
Bobo I just sent you a PM for yours but if the only difference between the 540i and the M5 is the internals then maybe Diny's cluster would be better to practice on. I mean in reality I would hate to ruin an otherwise functioning cluster just for the sake of an experiment.
You know eBay has all of these gauge face upgrades there must be a technique to remove the pointers, right?
