Exclamation Update...

When I removed my original handle, I was not able to separate the leather grip from the attached steel hand brake mechanism (that's inside the leather boot).
In other words.....you cannot just change the grip...but need to remove the center console and replace the entire lever unit.
Also, a note to anyone researching this topic; the handbrake mechanism differs between luxury and sport interiors (you can look up the different part numbers).
So, if one wishes to upgrade to a luxury interior handbrake, one needs to buy a whole new (different) handbrake lever + the matching grip cover (depending on your interior trim).
Labour on this is a b-tch !

It will come off, they are just a pain. Also easily damaged. Best way, is to wrap the inside of the handle with a rag. Then fit a wrench over the ebrake handle/arm and use a hammer against the wrench.

Again, they are damaged easy, and are most always a PITA to remove.

When I tried, there was zero give.
Since the grip doesn't have it's own part number.....I figured it not to come off...so I wasn't willing to apply that kind of force to it.
So you're saying that the black leather grip piece will twist off the arm ?

I only know that they pull off on the E34 E36 not sure about other models. it takes a bit of force but not to much. i would check with dealer if they are seperate part. I would have thought they are.

No it does not twist off. They only fit in one position, as the front of the handle is angled for the release button. They slide on/off, you just have to use a good amount of force to get it to slide forward.

Pull the boot up, rear first. Fold that all the way forward over the handle, and cut the cable tie that holds the two together. Continue sliding the boot over the handle and it will be completely removed, and inside out at this point.

Get a rag and wrap the inside edge of the handle to protect it. Then use a speed wrench to slide over the ebrake arm, butted against the back of the handle. Then just hit the wrench with a hammer and it will pop off.

I've got a leather handle e-brake assembly that I'll sell you. Here's a pic if the leather part - very nice condition. I can post a pic later of the whole assembly. Problem is, I don't have a clue what it's worth. A little help......
