Porsche 911 Turbo and Porsche Panamera Forum | panameraboard.comFor Porsche owners and the upcomng BMW M5 competitor: the four-door Porsche Panamera. panameraboard.com
I have decided to buy a 996 turbo and would like some greatly appreciated advice on my dilemma. I am considering the standard 996 turbo or possibly an X50 TT or 2002 GT2.
The only reason I would consider a standard turbo is if I was going to modify it or possibly the obvious, for financial reasons. However, I do have concerns of voiding the warranty. I would keep the X50 and GT2 stock, except for maybe different wheels.
If I buy the X50 or GT2, I will probably need to sell the M5 and buy a less expensive sedan, such as a 2004 Honda Accord as my primary daily driver.
I will be using the 996 turbo as a partial daily driver and weekend toy (3 days a week).
What would you do? Thanks in advance for the feedback.
Sandy

Glad to see you are following your heart on this one. Personally, I would get the 996tt and throw some modifications onto it and have a very fast car that is faster and still costs less then the X50. The GT2 is a great car from what I have heard, but you need to really be on your toes at all times with that much power, rwd, and no traction control. With the market being as tough as it is right now for used M5s, I would recommedn keeping the M5 and getting a used 996tt and throwing a chip, exhaust, suspension, ssk on it. A couple of the chips are undetectable and I beleive the Porsche dealers are more willing to work on cars with modifications then a BMW dealer. Whatever way you go, I think you will be happy with your decision. Good luck and please keep us updated.
An Accord makes the most sense to be a daily driver. And it won't matter to you as much if you stick loads of miles on it compared to the M5. The Accord will win hands down when it comes to running cost compared to the M5. As for performance that doesn't really matter as you are buying a daily driver, you don't need performance really. Thats what weekends and second cars are for. Which if I was you I would go for the Porsche GT2 check out some of Lonman's videos. Learn to drive it well and it will reward you more that a 996TT and X50 could ever do.
Hey Sandy,
I would get an stock TT and do the GIAC chip and fabspeed exhaust. That should get you at about 470HP for around $5-6K. GT2 is a great car but too expensive, X50 if you are not going to modify it.
Originally posted by DiscoFish Ditch the M5, get a non-X50 911 Turbo, and modify it. There's plenty of used 911 Turbo's out there to take your pick from.
Then, if anyone wants to talk crap about how you drive a work-a-day family sedan...you can say "Yeah well...I have a 911 Turbo at home."
You know your on an m5 board when you throw that advice around?
Sandy,
Keep the m5 and buy a 01, they are beautiful cars keep it stock for a little bit, get to know the car then you can start tinkering around with it regarding mods. And that way you keep two amazing automobiles,
great stuff and keep us posted!
all the best

I would go for the GT2. It is a very special car. Owning a GT2 is the ultimate for a Porschephile (until the Carrera GT hits these shores). A 996TT is nice....but pretty common and definately makes me smile when I see one... however....a GT2 makes me go "Wowwwwww!!!". Lots of Porsche owners try to make their car even look like it...that should tell you something. The GT2 is the most beautiful 911 incarnation I have laid eyes on...even my wife is obsessed with it (chicks dig it)!!!
You live in Nevada...so all-wheel drive shouldn't be an issue as it would be here in the Northeast. Chalk another point up for the GT2.
I know that I would sleep easier at night knowing that I didn't have to foot the bill for a blown engine. So if you want 450+hp with peace of mind...chalk a point up for the GT2 and X50.
