        Three hours with Alois Ruf

Sometimes you just get lucky. I've been exploring Ruf cars on and off for the past 6 months, but only recently got serious. My phone rings and I find out Mr. Ruf is coming to So. Cal for a Concours (sp?) in Orange County... That's how I ended up having dinner with him yesterday at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

First of all, he is incredibly warn and nice and you can tell he loves everything about what he does. Then, you add in everything he knows, and you get a pretty good dinner companion.

We talked about everything from his approach to his cars to the changes at Porsche through the years. And while I don't feel comfortable expressing his views without asking him first of some topics, here were some things we talked about.

His personal Rturbo, with his premium engine package, just set a new speed target: 351kmh. This is a narrow body car I think.

They are working on the next true Ruf car, the first since the CTR's. (I feel okay posting this because it is discussed in the magazine I just read). It promises to be in the Super Car realm.

He talked about his philosophy of trying to broaden the range of peak HP/Torque as the best way to enhance the driving experience, and indeed if you look at the graphs you are often looking at a more than 3000rpm range where you are at or near peak. He mentioned he thought the PSM system Porsche has is excellent, and that of the recent stock Porsche's his favorite is the GT2.

And on and on and on...

It was nice to see someone so excited and enthusiatic about what he did.

As a bonus, a current Ruf owner joined us. He has a very special car which Mr. Ruf built for him. The blue one pictured here before! It has widened track both front and rear, and thus has totally custom body panels...etc. It was great to see how Mr. Ruf had tackled this design challenge -- he managed to make the extra wide car seem totally Porsche. This car has seen 205 mph.

Of course, the valet parked it next to my GT2. Suddenly my car went from looking like a 'his' to a 'hers'.

Adam, Mr. Ruf says hello. He was very excited that you and I "knew" each other. He claims you talked your father into getting the car!

Awesome... you got to meet the God of automotive engineering.

So, did he convince you to get an R Turbo?

BTW, how much more power is his enhanced R Turbo package? If I go the Ruf route, that is definitely what I am going to get.

Wilber and I were talking last night about going to their shop in Pfaffenhausen sometime this year.

        Post Future plans...

Truth is I am, in my very limited spare time, trying to figure out what I'm doing when. I know a RUF car is something I am going to do. Have always wanted one of his creations. However, Rturbo or do I wait for his next full creation due soon. A car worthy of the GT I'm sure... Not sure yet.

What is the perfect stablemate to the GT2? A 360 Spyder? A Ruf Spyder?

One thing for sure, after talking with Mr. Ruf, one feels as if they HAVE to have one. and it isn't because he sells it in anyway. He doesn't. It is because he rediates that aura of excellence/craftsman...

04, I believe. However, Mr. Ruf will sell no car until he loves it. I believe it will be "timeless" in design, light, agile, and the present day performance leap the CTR's represented back in "their day".

And unlike Porsche GT, don't expect 1000-1200 of them.

Why not just "settle" for the GT2 for the time being and wait till the new RUF comes out? Why upgrade what many consider to be one of the top three road going Porsche's of all time, unless it's not enough for ya, in that case, RUF on!

I'm looking to add to the stable, not trade in the duece as I call it. At least not yet. What are the other two top road going porsches?

And FWIW -- I hand built Ruf with Ruf vin done exactly the way you like it... Well, just ask Adam's dad how tempting
