New TT owner, looking at upgrades

Hi fellow TT owners,

I just got a Titanium Silver 2002 TT w/x50 package. I will drive the car stock for awhile but will surely want to add the following. Would love to get some help as to what are the best places to buy these parts and what are the best manufacturers for each.

(in no particular order)
1. Suspension
2. Short Shift Kit
3. Clear/Dark turn signals
4. Roll Bar w/camera mount
5. Wheels and tires (how big can I go in the rear)
6. Chip, can I still get if I have the x50 set up?

Thanks everyone,

Fred

You have to get a boost gauge/control!!

Check this out...

Fred, contact FVD for chip/engine upgrades. I think they have one of the best reps. around and they can do something for X50s. I would hold off on engine mods if I were you (because you have the X50 and the warranty to go with it) you lucky dog you!

Congrats Fred!

Another M5 owner who bought a Turbo! Wow there is quite a few now. I just sold my M5 too, it's a great car but I found that I rarely ever drove the car after taking delivery of my turbo.

Fred, I have done quite a few mods using different tuners. I can say that be very careful who you choose, if you have problems or you are not satisfied with the results you maybe SOL.

You can email me or PM, and I can give you some insights on my personal experiences. I am now in the process of changing out my turbos and having different ECU tuning done.

Harry,

Who is FVD? That set up is clean and I would like to that set up. Thanks for the quick help. Who's car is that?

Oak, just PM me and let me know, would love to hear some experiences you have had. Initially I WON'T do any engine mods. I will do more aesthetics and suspension.

Thanks so much guys,

fred

Angel, That shot is of Shanks turbo on Funcarsonline great turbo! I beleive that gauge is just for boost and not boost control, the stock turbo already has a digital bar gauge. The reason why Shank is using a analoge type of gauge is because he is using a piggyback type of ECU tuning which will only allow the stock reading. It is a quirk with the type of tuning, it fools the stock ECU and re maps and reprograms the data to the engine. The stock program thinks the engine is running on stock perameters.

Yep, thats Shank's car all right. I love the analoge look!! oak, i'm not sure if it's for control. FVD is one of the top shops around from what I have gathered. I have had no personal experience with them but I have heard some very possitive things about them. website

Oak, ETA on when your car will be finished? I look forward to some details!

I wonder how much HP/Torque you can get out of just changing the boost on an X50.

Mods

Congrats Fred.
I went from the '01 M5 to a '02 M3, (for 5 months until the engine blew), and have now had my 996TT, (non X-50), since May. An awesome car, I drive it as my daily driver, and will do so until the winter months.
As for modifications:
Get Invinca-shield; Stongard; Armourfend etc. ASAP. I have mine covered with Invinca-Shield by Alan Seligman from Orlando, who did an incredible job. The best money I've spent.

Short shift kit; TechArt from Gert at www.carnewal.com. Worth the money, easy to install at the transmission side, no need to mess around inside the car. Another option is the Ruf piece which has just been released. Attaches at transmission like the TechArt, (in fact these two pieces look very similar), but has up to a 50% reduction I believe. The Techart goes to 30%. Ruf costs more of course.

Suspension: TechArt adjustable coilover kit. Multiple adjustment for ride height and compression/rebound. hence easy to adjust from 'street' to 'track' set-up. This is very similar to the Bilstein PSS9 kits, but Bilstein do not make their kit yet for the 996TT. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.
FVD also has an adjustable Coilover kit that I'm going to investigate soon.

Clear Euro front turn signal lights: Gert at Carnewal again. Gert is a pleasure to work/deal with. Great prices, service and quick delivery per DHL air.

Wheels/Tyres: Check with Wheel Enhancement. Porsche specialists. The stock GT-2 rim is 12" wide rear, but you may be able to go wider with the correct offset.

Roll Bar/Camera mount: Brey Krause.

Engine mods: Many tuners out there. I'm taking Oak's advice when I go Stage II.

Exhaust: Ruf. (personal preference as all exhausts are; most expensive but great quality and lovely sound imho).

Hope this helps.

P.S. Many thanks to 'Jack in LA' and Oak for great insights/advice.

fred, congrats on the car! i'm surprised you got the x50 package, being the mod freak you are. i don't believe anyone has a software upgrade for that yet. but it's a fast car for sure.
btw, it's not titanium silver. that's a bmw color. it's either arctic (most likely) or perhaps polar siver, which is a bluish silver, and costs more from the factory. you need to check out www.funcarsonline.com and www.rennlist.com
oak from the m5 board is very knowledgeable in tt mods, and very helpful. contact him for much info.
i drove with a bunch of 996 tt guys @ willow springs on monday.
fvd, techart, (cec wheels) and ruf are very popular right now.
mine's due first of jan. congrats!
