Facelift (2001+) tail lights L/R - WTB

I have a 1997 528i in the family herd and would like to update the original rear amber/red tail light housings to the newer (MY 2001+) style. I don't want to be futzing with the LKM or installing ballasts and don't want to spend as much as this 20Y car is "worth" for a set of lights, so the Hella celis ones are not under serious consideration -- I'm just looking for a plug and play upgrade. If anyone has a set of post-facelift tails hanging around or they have some advice as to decent aftermarket one, please shoot me a PM. Thanks in advance.

Well you pretty much have to put a ballast in for the tail lights if you want to upgrade. The Hella can be found on sale or via Scheidman for $300-400, and I've seen them use for $250 or so. It is a very nice upgrade, and the ballasts are plug n play. I've seen the depo/ebay ones and they look like crap (IMHO) unless you are going for a particular look, and then I guess it doesn't matter.

Headlights--again, its a matter of what you are willing to invest in either time or $$$. Umnitza for $1150 gets you plug n play EvoXR + Orion V4 angel eyes. Or 3-6 hours of DIY + youtube + $370 and you can have new Depo lenses + EvoXR kit (I still have mine for sale from the group buy for $250 + shipping) that will upgrade you to pre-facelift Xenon, and you can always add the AE later if you want to go that route (and I really wouldn't go too cheap here as the time it takes to install/switch out isn't worth the upfront $50-200 savings).

There are (IMHO) no great "cheap" options. If you are going to keep the car for 2 years, the above upgrades will run you about $1-1.50 per day if you were to amortize it out. That is cheap if you look at it that way.

Anyways, the MY 2000 tails are sort of face lift

I will be buying a set of MY 2000 tail lights from Clemsters part out thread. They are white/red rather than amber/red but not LED as 2001+ so plug and play with no ballasts/LKM coding etc, I hope. Stay tuned.
