Some cool photos and a update on my new stereo!

Hello everyone,

Sorry this is a long post.

It has been a while, so just checking in here again. I've been playing around a lot with my new Kodak 5.0 megapixel digital camera, so I thought I would share some updated photos.

I decided to upgrade my stereo system. My 2003 M5 came with the M Audio "upgraded" system which is not horrible but it really needed a kick since I am a real audio enthusiast as well as a car enthusiast.

The first upgrade was to go down the street to see the guys down at Bavarian Soundwerks (BSW). Micah and Jason are so nice to work with, they are just great! We decided to upgrade just the speakers to start with, so Jason installed a set of the MB Quart Discus series speakers. That is a nice upgrade, especially since the factory tweeters are weak! I have noticed that the mids and highs are a little more full and crisp now, and the main thing is that the tweeters are less hissy and raw now and more true to sound and detailed. I still have the factory amplifier powering the MB Quart speakers, so of course there is room for improvement but the system really sounds great!

I also got Jason to install a BSW 12" Alumapro subwoofer with the ultralight enclosure hooked to my JL Audio 500/1 amplifier that I already had in the car. Initially, I was running the JL 500/1 with a 12" JL 12W3 Subwoofer. I was not happy with the JL since it didn't sound tight and accurate to me. The BSW 12" subwoofer sounds so accurate and true compared to the JL 12W3. It is nice and tight, very musical but also lots of output. A great setup! I highly recommend the BSW subwoofers, you cannot go wrong.

We also decided to just go ahead and remove the M Audio subwoofers since basically they were just making the bass sound more muddy and rattling the rear deck. They are in mint condition and for sale, if anyone is interested, please PM me or email me at adamsgarrett@bellsouth.net

After leaving the guys at BSW, I could have just left my stereo alone and been perfectly happy like 95% of most people, but I have one of those minds that is always wanting more. Also, I originally had wanted a subwoofer setup that sounded great, but also looked great too and had more of a custom look that maybe could go with the silver "technical" theme of my car.

I found the answer with a custom Eclipse dual 12" Subwoofer box. I simply swapped the BSW sub box for the Eclipse sub box. The sound is very similar in general to the BSW 12" subwoofer, but there is more output. I'll be honest the BSW setup was probably slightly more musical, but the Eclipse setup has the look I want, plus it still is very musical and tight sounding and has more output. I am keeping the BSW subwoofer too, I'll probably use that in my wife's Jeep Cherokee. It sound too good to get rid of, I might even put it back in the M5 from time to time.

I used to like the JL Audio subwoofers, but they don't sound as clean and musical to me compared to the tight sounding aluminum subwoofers like Alumapro and Eclipse.

I am extremely happy with my stereo system now, it really rocks and is versatile with all kinds of music. I mainly listen to alternative rock type stuff and it sounds awesome.

So, enough babbling, here's the photos.

Thanks, Garrett

Nice system but where do you put the spare tire?

When I had my M5, I put the spare in that location. Had to use it once. Instead of me waiting 2 hrs or so for road side assistance I put the spare on in about 10 minutes.

Thanks for the review, Garrett! And thanks for swinging by today. After listening to the Eclipse setup that he has now, I agree that there's more output, but not quite the same level of clarity as with the Ultralight 12" system we installed. We're all about clarity first, output second, but I think the route you took fits your needs well.

Let us know if you can't get those rattles pinned down!

I'm really starting to like the new e60 M5, but to be honest...

I'd take your beast, looks fantastic really. Has such a classic look, cheers on the nice new stereo.
