I'm still learning about it but, as I understand it it's based on an M54 block supplied from the same source as BMW receive theirs, but hand finished, mated to a tweaked US spec S54 head - result is 305bhp (down on the S54) but 362Nm torque vs. 365 for the M3's S54 engine and up on the 294Nm of the 330i engine.

It makes for a really practical and refined tourer compared to the M3's brashness - really well finished and more than justifies the premium over a 330i
