Virginia Introduces $3550 Speeding Ticket - goes the way of Finland

If there was ever any question whether speed enforcement was about safety or stealing more money for the government, here is the answer.

It would be in the best interest of any driver to do the speed limit...or.... out run the arsehole who tries to stop you .

It's BIG BROTHER......must pay for all those illegals entering the country....we must give them EVERYTHING !!!!

Virginia is definitely not for lovers anymore, they are a bunch of haters. Everybody move to Maryland. That is going way over board. The Troopers in VA already has a bad rep, now it will be at its lowest.

That is unreal!! A $3500 ticket would be bad news to someone that can aford an M5 but that's 4 months wages for someone on minimum wage. I wonder how many bankruptcies and foreclosures this will cause as the police state of VA comes knocking on their doors.....

Salsa -- it is music, or merely a condiment?

"Led by state Delegate David B. Albo (R-Springfield), lawmakers slipped a driver responsibility tax into a larger transportation funding bill signed by Governor Tim Kaine (D) in April. Albo, a senior partner in the Albo & Oblon, LLP traffic law firm, can expect to see a significant increase in business as motorists seek to protect their wallet from traffic tickets that come with assessments of up to $3000 in addition to an annual point tax that tops out at $700 a year for as long as the points remain."

So let me see if I get this - A traffic lawyer is responsible for a law that creates severe penalties for even minor speeding violations. Hmmmm, does anybody else smell something a bit rotten there? Maybe a slight conflict of interest?

dude this is getting effing ridiculous...first ontario canada decides they can just take someone's car for modifications they deem "is for street racing" and then crush them. In time i bet the more liberal states here in america will adopt that....now this in virginia.... we need to stand up and fight this...its freaking ridiculous! i dont care whether most of us can pay it or not, no offence to you europeans but i dont want to have laws like them where we get fined out of the *ss for a simple speeding ticket. It will take all the fun out of driving, having to worry every two mins whether ur going to get pulled over and get huge fine for speeding.

Actually in a way thats more strict than our fines, even though the maximum fine here can be way bigger than that. But over here the fine is mostly dependant on the amount of income so a poor person could never get a fine of $3000.. but a rich person can and have gotten fines of hundreds of thousands.. the minimum fine over here is €50, then it rises to circa €150 and if your speed is too big to fit into that you get a fine of X amount of day income.. so for example 15days income fine, can be anything depending on income.

It really seems that every country is getting more strict on speeding etc. Very bad because I guess soon it will be the same if the car drives itself because you dont have any control on anything because of regulations, traffic, gas price etc.

All I can hear in my head are The Beatles singing Taxman...such a perfect song written so long ago and still applies perfectly. I think it is something like: "If you drive your car, I'll tax the street; if you take a walk, I'll tax your feet...because I'm the Taxman, ye-ah, ..."
