http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_fl...irflow_sensors
In short: Its an item that measures the air that flows through it. Knowing how much air flows into the intake manifold, computer uses that to know how much fuel to put in to get proper air flow ratio.
Cleaning the MAFs, not sure on this car. On my Vette all you could really do is wipe down insides. Not sure how the M5 looks, on Vette there was a very thin wire, very easy to brake if not careful, not cheap to repair either.
Hope this helps some, until one of the very knowledgable forum members goes into better detail.
Matt

No worries.
I am sure there are some good books out there.
Id venture a guess that there is an Automobiles for Dummies book even. (Not calling your a dummy by anymeans...)

Buy yourself a can of MAF cleaning spary from your local auto parts store. Take out the MAF (make sure that it is not hot) and spray throughly with the cleaning spray, making sure to coats all of the wires from both sides. Let it dry completely then reinstall. That is how we do it at the shop I work at.

Yep, it really is that simple. The way an MAF works is simple so there is not much too it. You start the car, the MAF wire is super heated to ~800 degrees then as air passes by it, it measures how quickly the wire cools down...
We work mostly on BMWs, Mercedes, Porsches, but our shop will take in any make/model. We actually do overflow work for our local BMW and Audi dealerships as they are pretty small considering the size of the island.

No, it isn't.
Hard to believe, but the sum knowledge on this board exceeds many dealerships.
It is an absolute fact that MAFs will degrade and affect performance well before the dealer can detect the degradation....
